The new lab was established as part of ITMO’s Infochemistry Scientific Center in November 2023. It is headed by Mikhail Medvedev, a researcher at the center and the head of the theoretical chemistry group at the N. D. Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry. Members of the laboratory study the behavior of chemical systems and develop new compounds with required properties using computer modeling, quantum chemistry, and AI.
In addition to conducting fundamental research, the lab develops business solutions at the intersection of IT and chemistry. For instance, molecular models of technological processes that are necessary to develop modern microelectronic devices. Another subject explored at the lab is that of neuromorphic calculations. With neuromorphic networks emulating the structure and function of the human brain, the researchers are planning to uncover the principles of neuron interaction and thus become closer to understanding human cognition.
“Today, infochemistry brings together various fields at the intersection of chemistry and IT. In 2024, the Nobel Committee also underlined the global importance and focus on AI-related and computational methods. Research in these fields is pivotal in Russia as well, addressing the challenges faced by both science and industry. Support for such studies is crucial,” says Prof. Ekaterina Skorb, the head of ITMO’s Infochemistry Scientific Center.
Digital TOP is an award founded by Delovoy Peterburg magazine. Among the winners are companies that have implemented the most efficient digital solutions, tools, and IT products to grow their business. This list includes Sberbank (for the technohub on Vasilyevsky Island), the Hermitage (for the digitization of the museum’s collection), the Committee for Transport (for the virtual transport card), Asphalt Plant (for the launch of digital financial assets in the field), etc.
