Description
We invite you to take a journey through the Golden Age of Russian science! The event celebrates the double anniversary of two prominent optics pioneers – Dimitri Rozhdestvensky (1876-1940) and Sergey Vavilov (1891-1951).
Dimitri Rozhdestvensky was the founder of the State Optical Institute and the scientist who solved a challenge of national importance; he established the manufacturing of optical glass in Russia and thus built the bedrock of the entire industry.
Sergey Vavilov was Rozhdestvensky’s student and successor whose breakthroughs in luminescence and the Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation effect, discovered together with Nobel laureate Pavel Cherenkov, brought Soviet physics to the forefront of world science. Later on, Sergey Vavilov was appointed the head of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union.
The exhibition offers a unique chance to explore the lives of two distinguished scientists in times of great change and learn how major historical events shaped the optics industry and paved the way for scientific breakthroughs.
