The participants presented their papers on terahertz (THz) radiation. THz can be used for medical scanning, security screening, quality control, atmospheric and space research. Unlike X-ray, terahertz radiation is not harmless. That is why THz scanning devices are widely used in airports to check travelers and their luggage.
The main focus of the Workshop is a dialogue between scientists and representatives of industrial companies. Organizers underline that this cooperation promotes the development of both science and technologies.
“It often happens that interests of ultimate customers differ from interests of researchers. They don`t understand each other. Such workshops decrease this misunderstanding,” Chris Mann, the chairman of “Water Window Ltd” said.
The participants also visited “Tydex”, one of the best Russian companies in the field of terahertz optics production. Taking the tour the young scientists saw how the up-to-date technologies are turned into reality.
ITMO University organized the Workshop with the assistance of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, The Royal Society of London and the British Council.
