The Science Slam competition was invented in Germany. Now it becomes more and more popular in Russia. The Science Slam is a speech contest where scientists present their research projects in a given timeframe - usually 10 minutes - in front of a non-expert audience, which judges the participants. At Science Slam 2015 in St. Petersburg the winners of previous St. Petersburg and Moscow Science Slam sessions gathered together to compete with each other. The participants have to present their projects in an entertaining way. Thanks to a noise level meter, which measures applause loudness, the judges chose the most interesting report.
“It is impossible to make a scientific community without real contacts and interaction between its members. Young researchers and people who are interested in science have to know each other,” said Mikhail Tupikin, the main organizer of the Science Slam.
The next St. Petersburg Science Slam will be held on November 22. But before that young researchers from different cities of Russia will meet together at the all-Russian Science Slam session on September 26. Andrey Seryakov, the researcher of the ultrahigh energy physics laboratory of St. Petersburg State University, the winner of the August Science Slam Session, explained “what and how accelerates the particles more than Large Hadron Collider”.
The young researcher Georgiy Milutin presented ITMO University. The topic of his research was “Is it necessary for all scientific fields to use math?” His idea was that some systems connected with brain activity couldn`t be analyzed using mathematical models because human behavior is a complicated thing. Together with his colleagues Mr. Milutin focuses on the following problem: how to apply a classical statistical approach to social networks.
