According to Times Higher Education LUT is in Top-300 educational leaders among universities. As Georgy Maslov, head of International Educational Programs Department, noted ITMO University collaborated with LUT before by making joint academic exchange programs.
This spring universities initiated one more project: ITMO University`s Chair of Mechatronics together with LUT`s Laboratory of Intelligent Machines developed a joint intensive course. “Mechatronic control engineering” includes fundamental and practical parts that aim to develop such skills as control systems` analysis and design both in programming and robotics. Students learned classical and modern engineering control methods as well as control systems` analysis and design based on Matlab and Simulink programs.
“We tried to unite the best mechatronics educational practices of both universities,” said Yury Monahov, head of Chair of Mechatronics. “All disciplines were taught in English. Some four Russian and Finnish professors prepared a special course. To make all information clear and accessible for international students our professors modified the program. It took a lot of efforts.”
“Mechatronic control engineering” consisted of 3 ECTS. After following the course students got a certificate, which gave them an opportunity to present it at their university. Thus they didn`t have to pass this disciplin again. Before coming to St. Petersburg Finnish students took part in online preparatory session, which consisted particularly of theoretical tasks.
“Apart from lectures the course included applied tasks,” said Anton Pyrkin, professor of Chair of Computer Science and Control Systems. “I presented my students new adaptive control methods developed for systems with a delay and systems with external disturbances.”
International students had their classes at St. Petersburg Finland Institute. Moreover, they also visited the Hermitage and Magic of Light exhibition.
“We hope that this course will become annual. We aims to organize it at ITMO University next year,” shared Mr. Maslov. “Currently we organize more and more short-term programs together with leading European and American universities. This summer we made such contacts with University of Rochester and University of Jyvaskyla.”
