Hello, Belhouchet! It’s great to have you here. Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?
Hi, Subhrajit! Thank you for having me. My name is Belhouchet Mohammed Siradj, and I’m a student at ITMO University, pursuing a second Bachelor’s degree in computer systems and technologies. I come from the vibrant country of Algeria and have always been fascinated by how technology shapes the world around us. My passion lies in understanding and designing innovative computer systems that drive advancements in fields like smart technologies.
That sounds fascinating! Could you share more about your hometown?
I’m from Batna, a historic city in Algeria known for its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes. It’s often referred to as the gateway to the Sahara. One of its most famous attractions is the ancient Roman ruins of Timgad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Growing up in such a picturesque and historic place must have been incredible. What was your childhood like in Batna?
It was a wonderful experience! I spent a lot of time exploring the outdoors, hiking in the Aurès mountains, and enjoying the calm streets of my neighborhood.
That’s amazing. Before ITMO, where did you study?
Before joining ITMO, I studied at the University of Blida in Algeria. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in aviation engineering there. My time at Blida was incredibly enriching, as it provided me with a solid foundation in engineering principles and problem-solving skills.
From aviation to computer systems – that’s an interesting shift! What fueled this transition?
Studying aviation taught me to think critically about complex systems and sparked my interest in technology and innovation. This naturally led me to pursue a more specialized program in computer systems and technology. I’m excited to build on my previous experience and explore new opportunities in this dynamic field.
How did you come across ITMO University?
I discovered ITMO while researching top-ranked universities in technology and innovation. ITMO’s reputation, particularly in these fields, stood out to me and I knew it was the right place to continue my education.
What motivated you to choose computer systems and technologies?
I’ve always been fascinated by how computers work – from the inside out. Understanding the logic and processes behind every click and program is exciting to me. Computer systems and technology form the foundation of everything we use in the digital world and I’m motivated to learn how to optimize and improve these systems. It’s thrilling to think about how advancements in this field can shape the future of technology!
That’s inspiring! Let’s talk about your life in Russia. How has your experience been so far?
Life in Russia has been a mix of challenges and excitement. One of my favorite places to hang out in St. Petersburg is Nevsky Prospect. It’s full of life, with cafes, shops, and beautiful architecture. I also enjoy spending time at the Peter and Paul Fortress. It’s peaceful and historic and offers great views of the Neva River.
And what are the challenges you’ve run into?
Adapting to a new environment always comes with challenges. The language barrier has been one of the biggest hurdles, especially when it comes to understanding technical terms or communicating in daily life. Adjusting to different cultural norms and lifestyles has also required some time and effort, but I am getting better with each passing day.
That’s understandable. On a lighter note, what hobbies do you enjoy?
I have two main hobbies: billiards and calisthenics. Billiards is a great way for me to unwind and challenge myself. Every shot requires precision and strategy, making it both fun and engaging. Calisthenics, on the other hand, keeps me fit and allows me to push my physical limits. I enjoy the variety of exercises like pull-ups and push-ups, and the fact that I can work out anywhere without needing equipment. Both hobbies help me stay balanced, mentally and physically.
Those are fantastic hobbies! Have you tried Russian food? Do you have a favorite dish yet?
Yes, I’ve grown to enjoy Russian food quite a lot now. The flavors are hearty and comforting, and there’s such a variety to explore. My favorite dish so far is pelmeni. It’s simple yet delicious.
So, what are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to explore opportunities in the tech field, particularly in computer systems and technology. I’d love to work in roles like software development, systems architecture, or even research. I’m also considering pursuing further studies, perhaps a Master’s degree, to deepen my knowledge of specific areas.
Those are ambitious goals! Lastly, do you have any advice for future students at ITMO?
Absolutely! My advice would be to embrace every opportunity to learn and grow. ITMO offers a wealth of resources, from academic programs to extracurricular activities, so make sure to take full advantage of them. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek help – professors and peers are often very supportive. Also, balance your studies with personal development through hobbies, networking, or exploring the city. Your experience will be much richer if you make time for new activities and connections.
That’s great advice. Thank you for sharing your story and experiences. It was a pleasure talking with you!
Thank you, Subhrajit! It’s been wonderful sharing my journey. I hope it inspires others to make the most of their opportunities.
