Hello there! Let’s begin this interview with your introduction.

Hello, everyone! I’m Truong Huynh Duc, but you can just call me Duc. I’m from Vietnam, specifically the beautiful province of Quảng Bình. I arrived in Russia in 2023 and am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in artificial intelligence at ITMO. Beyond my studies, I work as a DevOps engineer and I have a deep passion for technology and traveling to new places.

Very interesting! Tell us more about the region where you grew up.

Quảng Bình is a province in central Vietnam. It’s home to Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Sơn Đoòng – the largest cave in the world. It’s an incredible place to explore. Its history is also deeply rooted in Vietnam’s past.

Where did you study before coming to Russia?

I studied computer science at the Vietnam-Korea University of Information and Communication Technology in Da Nang. That’s where I built my foundation in technology and programming before deciding to continue my education abroad.

Why did you decide to study in Russia?

Russia has a strong reputation for excellence in science and technology, and I wanted to be part of that. Beyond academics, I wanted to experience a new culture, a different way of life, and expand my perspective by meeting people from all over the world. It is a decision that has not only broadened my knowledge, but also shaped me as a person.

How did you discover ITMO?

ITMO is well-known among Vietnamese students, especially those interested in IT. Many talented students from Vietnam have graduated from here and their success stories made ITMO a natural choice for me.

What are you studying at ITMO?

I’m a student in the program Programming and Artificial Intelligence, focusing on the intersection of AI and software development.

What motivated you to choose this field?

As a DevOps engineer and backend developer, I see AI as the future of technology. My goal is to contribute to AI-driven products like large language models (LLMs) and MLOps. The idea of building innovative solutions that can impact industries and everyday life is what excites me the most.

How has your life been in Russia so far? How does it feel to be an ITMO Student?

Life in Russia is a fascinating mix of history, modernity, and cultural richness. The architecture, traditions, and way of life here are truly unique. At first, it was a challenge – a new language, food, and environment – but I adapted over time. One of the best aspects is meeting friends from all over the world. My Master’s program is also amazing because it offers flexibility, allowing students to balance studies and work, which is a huge advantage. Of course, adjusting to the winter was a struggle – I had never experienced such cold before! But overall, living here has been an unforgettable experience.

What’s your favorite spot in St. Petersburg?

Definitely Nevsky Prospekt. It’s the heart of the city – full of energy, history, and life. The architecture is beautiful, it’s always lively, and there are so many great cafés and shops. Every time I walk there, I discover something new.

Are you living in a dormitory?

I live in the Vyazemsky dormitory. It’s convenient and I’ve met a lot of great people there. There is a big community of Vietnamese students living in this dorm, which makes settling down easier. I feel at home here.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love walking around the city and admiring the architecture. I also enjoy traveling and exploring different cultures – it’s something that gives me a fresh perspective on life.

Have you been to any other Russian cities?

Yes, I’ve been to Moscow. Each city has its own charm – St. Petersburg feels more historic and artistic, while Moscow has a fast-paced, modern energy.

Is there a Russian dish that you consider your favorite?

Yes! I’ve tried a variety of Russian dishes and I really like Olivier salad and borscht. They have a unique taste and remind me a little of home-style comfort food.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to continue working in software development, focusing on AI applications. If the opportunity arises, I’d love to stay and work in Russia. The tech industry here is growing and it would be great to be part of that.

Do you have any advice for future ITMO students?

It’s not just marketing hype – studying at ITMO truly provides you with an incredible learning experience. These years will shape your future, offering knowledge, hands-on experience, and valuable connections. Be ready to work hard, but also enjoy the journey.

Anything else you’d like to add?

One thing I’ve learned is that Russians may seem reserved at first, but once you get to know them, they are incredibly warm and welcoming. They take pride in their culture and are always willing to share it. Despite the language barrier, if you approach things with patience and an open mind, you’ll build meaningful connections.
