A vision board is basically a collage representing your dream life. Any desire you have, big or small, can be somehow put into pictures. So, the idea is to assemble them on a board – digital or physical – so that you would have a visual reminder of everything you wish to achieve.
The idea has to do with the practice of manifestation. Shortly put, it means that if you want something, you should actively imagine that you already have it, and act accordingly. A vision board can help you do just that, even if you aren’t sure that it’ll work. The process of creating it helps determine your goals and focus on them anyhow. Plus, it’s just fun to do! So, how do you get started on one?
Lay the groundwork
Some people have a pretty clear vision of what they want to achieve, others don’t. In any case, it’s worth spending some time reflecting on your aspirations. Journaling is a great tool for that. Try spending 10-15 minutes writing about your goals and desires for several days. Look for journaling prompts online if you need more guidance on how to do that.
If you have absolutely no idea what it is that you want, consider giving this step even more time, and for starters, journal about anything that is on your mind. The results of such self-observation may surprise you. Maybe deep inside, you already know what you lack!
Look for inspo
Once your wishlist of sorts is ready, it’s time to turn to social media, Pinterest, Unsplash, or any other platform where you can find inspiring pictures. Look for images that not only represent your object of desire but also are relatable and inspiring to you. Vision boards shouldn’t be filled with random pictures that simply look cute. They are supposed to be highly personalized. It’s better to base them on achievable goals you’re ready to focus on in the next year. Dream big, but remember to be reasonable, too.
Another way to customize your board is to do a bit of editing. For example, if you want to increase your savings, take a screenshot of your current bank account and edit the number, as if you already have all the money you need. Or create a job offer from your dream company.
Once you have selected several pictures, put them together using any tool you like – Paint, Photoshop, or online services like Pinterest’s collage feature. If graphic design is not your passion, browse the web for a template to work off.
What’s next?
It’s preferable to keep the vision board somewhere you can see it every day. Consider printing it out or setting it as wallpaper on your computer. Envision achieving your dreams every time you see it for a bit of extra motivation and inspiration in your daily life.
As someone who’s been making vision boards for several years, I can say that most of the stuff I put on them is now present in my life. Not like the vision board alone made it happen, but it certainly didn’t harm.
