The jury had to choose from ten participants of the Russian Robotics Olympiad finals, and ITMO’s project Strawberry Fields was considered the best.
Strawberry Fields is a smart fruit patch where you can grow strawberries. Using a camera, a robot spots the berries and then uploads the map of the patch to the Internet. Using a special app, anyone can choose any berry they like, after which the robot picks the chosen berries. The projects was conducted in collaboration with specialists from ITMO’s Biochemistry Cluster who supplied all the necessary materials and helped create Soft Robotics elements. Thanks to these elements, robots can work with fragile things, such as strawberries.
The team is made up of three school students: Vasily Dunaev, Dmitry Kharlapenko and Alexander Tyulpanov, with Igor Lositskiy as their coach.
The World Robot Olympiad 2018 will be held in Thailand on November 16-18. This year’s competition will revolve around the theme ‘Food Matters’ and focus on such topical questions as how to stop people dying from hunger, ensure food stability, and increase the quality of food.
Last year, ITMO University’s team, led by coach Igor Lositskiy, won the gold medal in the Open category’s Senior age group.
