  • Four ITMO University Students Receive SPIE Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship

    Four young researchers from ITMO University were chosen to receive the prestigious scholarship of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). The results of the scholarship competition have been recently announced on the SPIE website. SPIE annually supports students and PhD researchers working in promising fields. The scholarship is meant to cover attendance of SPIE conferences, participation in educational courses, and purchasing learning materials.   • IEEE Scholarship recipient Anna Kuzikova: Science is What Drives Self-improvement

    Anna Kuzikova, a “Terahertz Biomedicine” Laboratory employee, who is studying at ITMO University's Department of Photonics and Optical Information Technology, has won an international competition for the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society scholarship. It is one of the most prestigious scholarships for young scientists studying radio-frequency, microwave and terahertz radiation. No more than twenty people a year receive such an award. However, this is the seventh victory of an ITMO University student in the last twenty years. The jury praised Anna for her work on the diagnosis of cancer with terahertz radiation. An ITMO.NEWS correspondent met with the honored young scientist and learned how this research can help doctors, what Anna Kuzikova is going to do after this project and why she considers competitiveness as one of the main drivers of science.

  • Over Twenty ITMO University Students Win Potanin Scholarship Contest

    The Vladimir Potanin Foundation Scholarship Program is aimed at helping talented Master’s students of Russian universities. The selection of the grantees took place in two rounds: an offsite and an onsite one. First, the candidates submitted their resumes and a detailed description of their accomplishments, and in the second round, they participated in business games based on the results of which the judges issued a final ranking. In 2020, 500 out of 3,000 candidates were chosen to become the scholarship’s recipients throughout their Master’s; 27 of them are ITMO University students. ITMO.NEWS spoke to several of them to find out what helped them win and what advice they would give to future Master’s students gearing up to participate in the competition.

  • ITMO University Hosts Potanin Scholarship Contest Finals

    The on-site round of the Potanin scholarship contest for Master’s students was held in eight Russian cities between January 22 and February 10. The organizers usually keep the tasks of the on-site round secret, but their format is known to be not unlike that of business simulation games and case competitions. We asked representatives of the Vladimir Potanin Foundation about the aims of the contest and the qualities of a perfect candidate. The candidates themselves told us what motivated them to take part in the competition and the tasks they had to solve during the on-site round.

  • ITMO University and Gazprom Neft Launch New Scholarship Competition

    ITMO University students are invited to participate in a new scholarship competition organized by ITMO’s Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations in collaboration with Gazprom Neft and win a grant for the best startup project. The competition is held in three rounds. During the final round, which will be held in December, the participants will present their projects to the jury, made up of representatives of the university and experts from the industry.   • THz Success: ITMO Master’s Student Presents His Research in Paris

    ITMO University student Egor Litvinov believes that 2019 may well be his lucky year: he’s won a presidential scholarship to pursue studies abroad, became a laureate of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society scholarship and attended international conferences in Paris and Yokohama, where he also got the opportunity to present his research. ITMO.NEWS met with Egor to find all about his work and successes.

  • ITMO University PhD Student Awarded Ostrogradski Scholarship

    Tatyana Latynina, a PhD student at ITMO University’s Faculty of Photonics and Optical Information, made it to the list of awardees of the Ostrogradski Program’s Scholarship. Held annually, the program aims at helping young scientists from Russia visit research laboratories in France to conduct joint research projects together with their French colleagues. This fall, Tatyana will spend a month and a half at the University of Rouen, where she will study advanced electrical aluminum alloys. Such materials are now being studied intensively by various research groups all over the world. Research in this field opens up new opportunities for controlling the materials’ properties, such as their strength, heat resistance, and electrical conductivity.

  • IEEE Scholarship Winner on Opportunities Offered by Terahertz Radiation

    ITMO graduate Anton Zaytsev who is currently doing a PhD program at the University’s Faculty of Photonics and Optical Information has become one of the six people to receive a scholarship from the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society for implementing the project “Development of optically tunable graphene-based THz devices”. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Anton to learn how terahertz radiation can replace the X-ray, why he and his colleagues are looking for a replacement for single-layer graphene, and what is to be considered when applying for an international grant.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids of Plant Origin and Biomedical Tasks: ITMO Scientists’ Research at University of Lorraine

    This fall, PhD student Daria Kuznetsova and Master’s student Mariam Muradova from the Faculty of Food Biotechnologies and Engineering, who are also members of the “Biotechnologies of the Third Millennium” international research center, will go to the University of Lorraine to conduct research in the field of life sciences. For Daria, this will be her second trip to France, where she’ll continue to work on her research thesis. Mariam spent last year’s spring semester at the University of Verona, Italy, and this year, she will continue her research in the field of plant biotechnology.
