• Third Forum of Science Communicators: Responsibility and Challenges in Science Journalism

  On June 28, the Third Forum of Science Communicators was held at ITMO University. Organized with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the event became a platform for discussion and exchange of experience among science journalists, science popularizers, scientific press officers and researchers of science and technologies. Among the speakers were leading national and international experts in the field of science communication, including the prominent journalist and scientist Michele Catanzaro, who spoke about the challenges of science journalism, the latter’s responsibility to society and paths for development.

• German Week in St. Petersburg: Experts Discuss Science Communication and the Social Mission of Modern Science

  As part of the 16th German Week in St. Petersburg, ITMO University’s Science Communication and Outreach Office has organized an open discussion on the topic “The Changing Social Mission of Today’s Scientific Organizations”. Speakers from the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) discussed the work of scientific organizations in Russia and Germany and these organizations’ impact on social development.

• ITMO University and EUSP Launch Joint Master’s Program ‘Science and Technologies in Society’

  ITMO University and the European University at St. Petersburg have established a collaboration in the field of Master’s-level education and joint research. This Tuesday, February 19, the Rectors of these two universities have signed a partnership agreement and discussed their first joint Master’s program in the field of social research on science and technology.

• ITMO Graduate Anastasia Svarovskaya on Promoting Space Science

  This year, Anastasia Svarovskaya graduated from Russia's first Master's program in science communication. During her studies, she visited the Baikonur Cosmodrome and the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. Now, Anastasia conducts space-themed projects and writes for Russian and international magazines, as well as manages popular science communities in social networks. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, she spoke about the issues of promoting space science in Russia.

• Sport, Recreation, Intellectual Hobby: What is Birdwatching and How it Helps Scientists

  Birdwatching became a popular hobby after the release of Field Guide to Birds book by naturalist Roger Peterson in 1934. Currently the greatest numbers of birdwatching enthusiasts are in Great Britain and the USA, where they include up to 10% of the population. It’s not just a popular hobby but a billion-dollar industry. Mass amateur observations of birds are used by scientists when studying bird ranges and migrations. But in Russia birdwatching is still in its infancy. Why? How do you popularize amateur bird studies? How is it useful to the ornithologists and what technologies do birdwatchers need? Nina Sadykova, a science communicator at the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology of the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a popularizer of birdwatching came to ITMO University’s summer school of the Russian Geographical Society “Geography for Everyone”. She’s also developing a mobile app for identifying birds of Russia in collaboration with ITMO’s “Science Communications” Masters students.

• Think Critically: ITMO University Student Creates Popular Science Podcast

  Aleksandr Golovin, ITMO’s Master’s student in science communication, has created his own popular science podcast “Crytmysh”. Every week, he invites scientists and science popularizers to discuss different issues: is it OK to trust Wikipedia, what’s the deal with modern flat earth societies, was the Stanford experiment real and even how to choose wine. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Aleksandr about his podcast, new formats for popularizing science, pseudoscience and why science communicators should not become too conceited.

• Science Communication Research from American Journalists

  Mark Harris and Wayt Gibbs are American science journalists and graduates of the prestigious MIT Knight Science Journalism Fellowship program who are currently conducting a media tour around various Russian research centers. During their visit to ITMO University, they held an open lecture for Science Communication Master’s students, during which they answered the students’ questions and shared their perception of science journalism.

• WCSJ-2017: Making Science More Popular Than Politics

  The 10th World Conference of Science Journalists, the world’s biggest event in the field of science communication and journalism, took place on October 26-30 in San Francisco. The next conference will be held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2019. ITMO University and the Association for Communication in Education and Science (AKSON) plan to conduct a pre-conference press-tour to Russia for foreign science journalists. Head of ITMO’s Center for Science Communication Dmitry Malkov has told us why such events are needed to develop science communication and journalism in Russia.
