  • Motion Capture, VR and Video 360: New Technologies Enter Classical Art

    Choreography in VR, multimedia theatrical performances and virtual actors on a real stage - more and more new technologies are being introduced into classical art. Digital theatricals are now shifted with a single press of a button, and the very theaters have long developed their own data centers, started using analytical systems and are now looking to introduce  360 degree videos, as well as virtual and augmented reality systems. Arseny Nikolaev, ITMO graduate and chief engineer of Mariinsky Theatre’s  IPTV sector, speaks about new multimedia projects and the prospects of using new technologies in classical theatre.

  • Work on the Plot, Not the Graphics: Making VR-Gaming Mainstream

    Why are emotional context and the plot more important in a game than graphics? How can we save VR from fading into obscurity once the hype dies down and promote its use in not only gaming but elsewhere? Nelson Zagalo, associate professor of the University of Aveiro (Portugal), author of several books on videogame history and an active member of the Portuguese Society of Video Games Sciences, answered these questions. He was a guest at the second meeting of the VR/AR Association & ITMO University, organized by ITMO’s Department of Graphic Technologies of together with the project Video360Production.com and the International Association for Virtual and Augmented Reality.   • ITMO Students Develop VR Lecture Hall to Replace Onsite Education

    Horum is a virtual lecture hall where users can study any subject they like. The project’s team has been working on this service for more than three months, and they already have a demo lesson accessible to nearly any smartphone released after 2012. What is more, the online service can also be used to access the user’s VR projects and conduct lab work in a remote format. Starting with last year, the project is being accelerated as part of ITMO’s Future Technologies START program.

  • Science Fest 2017: Space, Big Data and VR

    Last weekend, yet another Science Fest took place in St. Petersburg.  As  this time the event was hosted at the recently-opened planetarium, guests were able to watch full-dome popular science films about space and space exploration. Adherents of “hard” science could also attend lectures on modern technology, the capabilities of hybrid intelligence and Big Data, while those who thrive for new experiences could try out VR apps and see a hologram of R2-D2 at ITMO University’s interactive zone.

  • ITMO And Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) to Collaborate On AR/VR Projects

    Yesterday, ITMO University and the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) signed an agreement on the creation of a joint Competence Center in the field of Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR). The meeting took place at TBoilSPb platform, as part of an informal educational conference "National Technological Revolution 20.35".

  • ITMO University Creates First Virtual Museum of Russian Architecture

    Specialists from ITMO’s Department of Engineering and Computer Graphics and the Design and Multimedia Center will create a 3D reconstructed version of the Feodorovsky Settlement in Tsarskoe Selo. The ensemble was constructed in 1917 on orders of the last Russian Emperor, Nicholas II and was intended to serve as a “live” museum of the Russian architectural style. The interiors, however, were lost during World War II. Now, thanks to virtual technology, they will be recreated and made available to all. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Roerich Family Museum-Institute, Russian Academy of Arts’ restoration workshop and I.P. Shmelev’s architecture workshop.

  • Starcon 2017: From Space Travel to 3D Printing

    The largest Russian festival of science fiction, fantasy, film and science is going to be held for the 18th time on July 28 to 30. Over three days, the guests can visit booths and shops, take part in quests and attend lectures. ITMO University has set up its own booth in the Science section. Visitors will be able to repair a spaceship, become a space captain, learn to control light or use a 3D-printer.

  • Second Day of VK Fest

    The second day of the main open-air event of St. Petersburg – VK Fest – has ended. Just like on the first day, the organisers of each location provided visitors with a chance to dance, learn how to make friends, visit workshops, walk through famous museums in VR format, play computer games and also learn about how to create them on their own. ITMO.NEWS has written about several key locations at this year’s festival.

  • First Day of VK Fest: Sports of the Future

    St. Petersburg is host to the annual VK Fest. Bloggers, artists, athletes, craftsmen and musicians  made popular by the Internet perform onstage and hold workshops. ITMO University participates in VK Fest as well, setting up its own interactive zone. This year, the theme dominating ITMO University’s space is virtual sports. Visitors can try boxing and hang gliding, riding a bike and diving into the water - all in the same spot - just by putting on VR-goggles. Within its interactive zone, the University has also organized workshops on beginner robotics, 3D-printing, drones, gigantic spinners and hacking practices inspired by the “Mr. Robot” TV series.
