  • EVA Saint-Petersburg: New Applications Of VR/AR Technologies

    Last week, ITMO University hosted the annual EVA SAINT PETERSBURG Electronic Imaging & the Visual Arts international conference organized by ITMO's Design and Multimedia Center and the Department of Engineering and Computer Graphics. The event itself was a discussion platform for both technical and non-technical scientists where they discussed different cases of combining culture and technology. One of the major topics was the use of VR and AR technologies for promotion of culture and arts.

  • Digitally Immortalized: How the Solovetsky Monastery is Finding a New Life in Virtual Reality

    Digital preservation of cultural heritage is becoming more and more trendy in both Russia and the world in general. The abundance of grants and commercial projects in this area signifies just how much the idea of digital preservation of historical, religious and cultural heritage of humanity is popular with the people; for that reason, numerous historical objects are now being memorialized in digital format. The Solovetsky Monastery, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, is no exception. For the past year, ITMO University staff, in collaboration with the scientists at the Solovetsky conservation area, have been working on creating a digital representation of the monastery, including a virtual 3D model of the monastery as it appread in 16-17 centuries, as well as an interactive map and virtual tours on the monastery grounds using Video 360 and Unity 3D technologies.

  • Science Fest: Growth of VR, Functional Food and Why Humanity Will Always Return to Earth

    Virtual reality, the science of the brain, human development and space – these were the topics on the first day of Science Fest that took place this weekend at creative space “Lumier Hall”. The visitors attended lectures about the future of VR, prospective professions, functional food and first-hand accounts about the experience of being in space. In addition, the creative space held workshops on robotics, augmented reality, game development and other topics.

  • Video360Production Films Construction Sites In Crimea

    On April 20th, it was the opening of Yalta International Economic Forum (YIEF), which is one of the four major Russian economic forums alongside St. Petersburg Economic Forum, Eastern Economic Forum and the Russian Investment Forum in Sochi. As part of the event, Crimea's top officials checked the construction process of the projects that are now built on the shore of the Black Sea. The data on these projects was presented not as documents, but 360-degree videos filmed by Video360Production's team.  The videos depicted the construction of the Simferopol airport, two big residential complexes and one of the two conventional thermal power stations that will provide energy for the whole peninsula.  ITMO.NEWS learned about how the filming process, and what were the main difficulties Video360Production's team had to solve.
