  • Turning Complex Into Simple: How To Visualize Data and Get Your Message Across

    Data visualization is a language, in which each interactive map and neat diagram stand for massive amounts of data that had to be processed, presented and explained in an accessible manner. That is what students learn to do at the scientific storytelling course offered within ITMO’s Master’s program in science communication. The course was developed by Aleksandr Bogachev, a specialist in data visualization, infographics, and data journalism, as well as the author of the book Graphics That Convince Everyone, who quit his career in medicine to work with data and charts. ITMO.NEWS talked to Aleksandr to learn more about why people develop passion for figures and how to become data fluent.

HowWeSurvive allows you to explore an interactive world map and learn how people are dealing with quarantine in other countries, in other cities, or on your block.   • Harvard Medical School Professor Peter Kharchenko: Using Statistics To Understand How Cells Work

    Peter Kharchenko is one of the world’s leading specialists in transcriptome research. He received a PhD in Biophysics at Harvard University, studying gene regulation and metabolic networks under the advisement of George Church, a renowned geneticist and a molecular engineer, Director of PersonalGenomes.org and a science communicator. These days, Peter is head of his own lab at Harvard Medical School. In December, Peter visited ITMO University with an open lecture. We got to talk to him about the statistics needed to understand how cells work and why this research can help in disease diagnosis.

  • Slovenian Researcher Luka Stopar: “Data Analysis and Visualization is Art and Science Combined”

    Luka Stopar, a researcher at Jožef Stefan Institute (Slovenia), has recently delivered a lecture at ITMO University. He is currently working on several grand European projects, including RENOIR, which aims to create new mechanisms of social data analysis. During his lecture, Luka Stopar described the different ways in which machine learning and intelligent data analysis may be used in the visualization of diverse data sources. In this interview, Dr. Stopar told ITMO.NEWS how the development of data analysis and visualization is changing the media and why journalists are not losing their jobs to computers anytime soon.

  • Tourism by Numbers: ITMO University Presents Projects at Saint Petersburg Travel Hub Expo

    The forum and exhibition Saint Petersburg Travel hub, which gathered members of the nation’s tourist community and participants from 57 regions of the country, has recently come to a close. This year’s Travel Hub coincided with the 23rd session of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization. One of the forum’s topics was the digital transformation of the travel industry. ITMO University took part in the exhibition; its staff presented a number of interdisciplinary projects that weave together the history and culture of St. Petersburg with digital technologies.
