  • Assassin’s Creed Won’t Help: An Expert’s Opinion on Restoration of Notre Dame

    On April 15, a massive fire engulfed Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral. While the fire destroyed its roof and iconic spire, firefighters were able to save the famed bell towers. The French government has already established four reconstruction funds (over €1 billion has been raised to date), while French President Emmanuel Macron promised that the landmark will be fully restored in five years with the help of the world’s best architects. Can 3D modeling benefit the reconstruction process? Could video games come in handy too? In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, Artem Smolin, the head of ITMO’s Educational Center of Graphic Technologies and the Center for Usability and Mixed Reality, shares his opinion on the use of modern technologies in the cathedral’s reconstruction.

  • Shadow Samurai: Motion Capture Game by ITMO Developers

    A group of ITMO students together with the TAU Tracker company released their Shadow Samurai game, which uses motion capture gloves. The game demonstrates the technology’s efficiency: using a VR helmet and TAU Tracker gloves, you can interact with the virtual world without any gamepads and controllers. The project was presented for the first time at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that was held in Las Vegas in January. According to the developers, apart from the gaming industry, the technology has some other applications, for example, in such fields as medicine, car manufacturing, and robotics. ITMO.NEWS met with the director of ITMO’s Master’s program ‘Game Development Technologies’, Andrey Karsakov, and asked him about the project and its prospects for the future.

  • University of Amsterdam Professor on the Importance of Crowd Behavior Research and Putting Minecraft to Good Use

    Human behavior analysis is one of the most important and complex contemporary research topics. It can be used for designing safe and reliable structures and spaces to help people during evacuations and other emergency situations. Working as part of a research group, a University of Amsterdam professor Michael Lees has developed a Minecraft-inspired game that was used for studying human behavior in emergencies forcing people to navigate their way through an unknown territory. Prof. Lees unveiled the findings during his ITMO University lecture, dedicated to the development of a new game-based experimental approach aimed at achieving a better scientific understanding of humans.
