  • ITMO Researchers Develop Algorithm System to Boost Efficiency of COVID-19 Treatment

    Scientists at ITMO University have created a system of algorithms that uses data gathered from COVID-19 patients to suggest optimal treatment for every patient. The technology was originally developed for the treatment of cancer and cardiovascular diseases, but, given the current events, the system was taught to help COVID-19 patients. The algorithms are based on Russian and international clinical protocols.

  • Lasers for Medicine: ITMO and Partners Work on Improving Medical Titanium Alloys’ Biocompatibility

    Team of the international laboratory “Laser Micro- and Nanotechnologies” wins Russian Science Foundation grant for fundamental research.   • Scientists Create Program That Finds Synteny Blocks in Different Animals

    An international team of scientists that included researchers from ITMO University developed a software tool that makes it possible to quickly and efficiently find similar parts in the genomes of different animals, which is essential for understanding how closely related two species are, and how far they have evolved from their common ancestor. The research was published in Giga Science.

  • ITMO University Launches Laboratory of Genomic Diversity

    In 2020, ITMO University has launched the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity under the academic supervision of the renowned American scientist Stephen J. O’Brien. This new department is to become an important Russian center of bioinformatics, where scientists will work on collecting genomes of different living organisms and studying genetic diversity of animals and people. This work should help in fighting many diseases while also providing a better understanding of the ways in which biodiversity changes on our planet. ITMO.NEWS met with the coordinators of this emerging laboratory and learned what research they plan to do in the near future.

  • ITMO Researchers’ Project Named Top Innovative Product by St. Petersburg Committee for Science and Higher Education

    A project by ITMO University’s SCAMT Industrial Lab has been named the winner of the 2019 St. Petersburg Competition of Best Innovative Projects in Science and Higher Education. The awards ceremony took place as part of the 12th St. Petersburg International Innovation Forum. The winning project, First Aid, is an innovative treatment for post-surgery scarring, stretch marks, cuts, and burns for patients of all ages. The project is being developed by the Master’s and PhD students of ITMO’s ChemBio Cluster. Olga Sokolovskaya, the head of the project, spoke with ITMO.NEWS about this invention, results of the team’s research, and their future plans.
