  • ITMO Scientists Design a Model to Protect Quantum Computing From Disorder

    Scientists from ITMO’s School of Physics and Engineering have predicted that topological states that occur in a two-dimensional array of superconducting qubits make the system robust to disorders. This may allow scientists to make certain algorithms of quantum computing resilient to defects in the structure, which opens up new opportunities for the design of superconducting quantum processors.

  • ITMO Physicists Prove Feasibility of Non-Radiating States in Compact Acoustic Resonators: New Discovery Will Benefit Development of Acoustic Antennas and Sensors

    Researchers from ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics have succeeded in disproving a non-existence theorem which states that oscillations in open resonance systems must fade out by radiating energy into the surrounding medium. The physicists were able to calculate the shapes of acoustic resonators for which this theorem would not apply. In the resulting system, the energy of oscillations does not radiate into the surrounding space and remains within the resonator. Results of this research will facilitate the development of acoustic antennas and sensors.

  • ITMO University Physicists Discover Proof of Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek’s Time Crystal Hypothesis

    Two ITMO University physicists – PhD student Valerii Kozin and ITMO Fellow Oleksandr Kyriienko – have described genuine time crystals in an article in Physical Review Letters. These structures’ existence was first suggested by Frank Wilczek, laureate of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics, but other studies have asserted the impossibility of creating environments in which these crystals would exist. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Valerii Kozin to find out what time crystals really are, how the two scientists were able to prove the existence of a system in which they would exist, and what Einstein has got to do with it.

  • Physicists Discover New Way of Resonance Tuning for Nonlinear Optics

    A research team from ITMO University and the Australian National University has discovered that different metasurfaces exhibit the same behavior provided a symmetry breaking is introduced to their unit cells (“meta-atoms”). Asymmetry of meta-atoms results in high-quality (high Q) resonances in the transmittance spectra of metasurfaces. Such resonances are capable of multiple amplification of external signals. By manipulating the asymmetry, scientists were able to control the resonances and thus a metasurface’s optical response, which is highly desirable for practical applications. The results of this research were published in Physical Review Letters.
