  • Sustainable Development Expert on Green Thinking and Eco-Friendly Construction

    Guy Eames is chair of the Russian Green Building Council (RUGBC) and has a master’s in climate change and sustainable development. For the last 10 years, he has been actively promoting the concept of green building in Russia. As part of the online open day of ITMO’s Laboratory of Sustainable Urban Development, Guy Eames spoke about the tools of environmentally friendly construction which are already being applied in Russia and abroad, and shared his opinion on the future of this trend.

  • Academy of Talents: ITMO’s Specialists from Institute of Design & Urban Studies Host Lectures for School Students

    St. Petersburg’s Academy of Talents has hosted Live City, a specialized educational program on urban science and design for school students. Participating as experts of the projects were the staff of ITMO University’s Institute of Design & Urban Studies. The specialists contributed with a series of introductory lectures and held interactive workshops. This should help the 9-to-11-graders to find a relevant topic for team research work that they could then present at the national competition of scientific and technological projects “Big Challenges” in the track “Smart City”.

  • ITMO Urban Studies Specialist Participates in Major Urban Planning Conference in China

    On July 8-12, the biggest research conference in the field of urban studies, Computers in Urban Planning and Urban Management (СUPUM), took place in China. Held every second year, the conference brings together leading urban specialists from all over the world. At this year’s conference, Russia was represented by two participants, among whom was Egor Smirnov, a staff of ITMO University’s Institute of Design & Urban Studies. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, he talked about the main topics discussed at the conference, the latest advances in the field of urban studies, and the research conducted at the Institute.

  • What Are Vernacular Regions and Why Study Them?

    Should we perceive a city according to its administrative layout, or it is better to consider how its citizens fathom the urban environment? In the late 1960s, American geographists introduced the term “vernacular region”. In recent years, Russian urban scientists also started to research this subject. At a joint seminar organized by ITMO’s Institute of Design and Urban Studies and MLA+, experts discussed why it’s necessary to study regions that are not outlined by official borders, and how that can contribute to improving the urban environment.

  • Affiliate-Friendly Advertising Network: Connecting Small Businesses and Clients

    According to urban development specialists, Big Data analysis can help people form close-knit communities based on shared values and interests. This is the main objective of a new project with the working title ‘Affiliate-Friendly Advertising Network’, launched by the Quality of Urban Life Laboratory (QULLAB), a resident of ITMO’s Institute of Design & Urban Studies. What this network does is it gathers and analyzes data about citizens’ visits to restaurants, cafes and other eating spots in St. Petersburg. The laboratory’s project even became the winner of a competition organized by the Institute of Media, Architecture and Design as part of the In the City Conference.

  • Voting Begins as ITMO Highpark Exhibition Opens in St. Petersburg

    From November 22 till December 15, 2018, an exhibition of concept designs for ITMO University’s new campus and innovations center Highpark will be hosted in the ITMO building at Lomonosova St. 9. Students, staff and guests can learn about each of the four architectural proposals and cast their vote by filling out a form on the spot or taking the online survey.

  • What Future Does Climate Change Spell for St. Petersburg?

    Climate change, global warming, and other environmental issues remain constant hot topics all around the world. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has recently published its latest assessment report, calling for immediate action against global warming. An increase of global temperature, even by a mere 1.5 degree Celsius, could have disastrous and irreversible consequences. Experts from Russia and Germany met at ITMO University to participate in a roundtable on climate change. One of the event’s speakers was Viktor Gorny, a researcher at the Scientific Research Center for Ecological Safety at the Russian Academy of Sciences (SRCES RAS), who reported how climate change would affect the citizens of St. Petersburg.
