When it comes to electronics, topological insulators provide a valuable service by allowing a stable flow of energy in spite of defects, changes in direction, and other obstacles. Now, having applied the same principle towards photonic systems, researchers at ITMO have designed the first-ever 3D photonic topological insulator. The device should prove highly useful in development of optical computers – and newer, compact versions are already in the works.

Within the immune system, macrophages are supposed to protect the body from harm; however, malignant tumors often “hijack” these systems to support their growth. A new inter-university study has described a cancer therapy approach that reverses the process and re-activates the macrophages. The resulting method is highly precise, minimizes negative side effects, and will soon enter the next stage of testing.
Education
The launch of admissions at ITMO looms closer – and that means plenty of new programs to choose from! Last week, a new Bachelor’s program in game development was announced at the annual GameDev Day. Here, students will get to learn all about designing games: from creating levels and using modding tools to studying the market and managing teams. What’s more, the more traditional thesis will be replaced with creating a full-on gaming project from the ground up.
