    A few years ago, Mekhti Musaev graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and spent several years working in the industry. In that time he worked on both simple backend apps and complex scientific projects. This made him realize that, if he wanted to keep moving forward and maintain a career in IT, the basic knowledge acquired at a Bachelor’s program would not be enough.   • ITMO Students Gear Up For Convoluted Machine Competition

    ITMO University’s team “Arikaton” has qualified for the final stage of the Goldberg Cup, Russia’s first competition for creators of Goldberg machines – overly complicated contraptions that perform simple tasks. The team will present a machine that displays the movie “IT”, decorated in the film’s style. The competition values unique construction and unusual visual style of the machines. Its mission is to encourage young people to think creatively, build things and approach ordinary tasks from new angles.

  • Telemedicine in Russia: How IT Technologies Help Improve the Healthcare System

    According to Watson Health, a subdivision of IBM, the amount of data generated by each patient throughout his life exceeds 1000 terabytes. Yet, how can we store this data, effectively manage it as part of a common medical system, and what's most important, is the Russian healthcare system ready for a countrywide introduction of information technologies? The Federal Almazov North-West Medical Research Centre has a medical information system that makes use of an experimental decision support system developed by ITMO University, and the country’s Federal Telemedicine Center has the opportunities to provide remote consultations to more than 5,000 patients a year, as well as training to medical specialists all over Russia. During a recent tour of the Almazov North-West Medical Research Centre, ITMO's Master's students learned about the modern medical information systems (MIS), the prospects of their applications, and the software that medical specialists will need in the future.   • ITMO Student Wins Sberbank Scholarship to Develop Neural Network for Investment Planning

    Natalia Khanzhina, Ph.D. student at the Computer Technologies Department, is the recipient of a scholarship from Sberbank. The fledgling researcher took part in an IT project competition that required her to make a system that would create customized investment portfolios for customers. The program involves deep-learning technology; after completion, it will be adopted by the bank’s system while Natalia herself will have the opportunity to intern in the company’s IT department or even find employment there.

  • How a Russian Teenager Cracked Nation's Largest Social Network in His Spare Time

    Ilya Glebov is 17 years old. This spring he graduated from one of the best school in Monchegorsk – a small town in Murmansk Oblast with a population of over 40 thousand people. While preparing for his Unified State Exam (USE) in computer science, he stumbled upon an article about a vulnerability in Facebook’s security system that made possible the hacking of nearly all of the accounts on the social network. He decided to try the same “trick”, as Ilya calls it, with VK. Eventually he discovered that such a vulnerability was also present in the Russian social network. Ilya was rewarded with two thousand dollars for his discovery and he received one more thousand from ICQ’s bug-bounty program after it was revealed that that platform was, too, susceptible to this method. However, Ilya will only be able to get his money after he turns 18. Right now he is planning to enrol in a university to study information security. He spoke to ITMO.NEWS about how he managed to find a flaw in Russia’s biggest social networks in between studying.

    The Kotlin programming language, developed by St. Petersburg company JetBrains, has become an official development language for Android, which was announced at Google’s recent I/O 17 Conference.   • ITMO Graduates Get Top Salaries

    The Superjob research center published the ranking of Russian universities by the highest salaries their graduates who work in IT get. 20 universities got into the top; ITMO entered the top-3, becoming the only St. Petersburg university to get into the top-5 and shifting the Moscow State University to the 4th position.
