  • 2019 Light Nights in Gatchina: Projects by ITMO Participants

    On August 16-17, 2019, the annual international festival of light art “Light Nights in Gatchina” took place at the Gatchina Palace and Estate Museum. Each year, the festival brings together students of Russian and international universities, artists, designers, multimedia professionals and creative collectives and design studios from Russia, Europe and beyond. 2019 has been the third year that the students of ITMO University’s Master’s program “Lighting Design” participate in the official selection of the international festival. This year, it was ITMO’s students Lyubov Angelova, Mikhail Andreev, and graduate Valeria Molodovskaya that took part in the event’s art residency.

  • ITMO Fellow Fabio Bonsignorio and Professor Alexander Kapitonov: Research Reproducibility Will Generate a Sea Change in Our Economy

    Fabio Bonsignorio is one of the most prominent researchers in the field of biorobotics and technologies of the future. He is also a participant of the ITMO Fellowship program. Together with Alexander Kapitonov, associate professor at the Faculty of Control Systems and Robotics, the scientist works on a range of projects on research reproducibility and openness, using blockchain technologies for communication between automated systems, and other fields. ITMO.NEWS spoke with the two researchers to find out how blockchain and robots can change the industry, what is research reproducibility and why it is important.

  • Congress of Young Scientists: Winning Projects

    Apart from taking entrance exams, there are other ways to join a Master’s program at ITMO University. For one, you can get a tuition-free position by winning the report contest of the annual Congress of Young Scientists. The winners of this year’s event are already known.   • Helping Sleepwalkers, Fighting Excessive Snow and Ensuring Better Security on Campus: Best Projects by 2019 “It’s Your Call!” Participants

    “It’s Your Call!”, a winter school organized by ITMO University together with Sberbank, has just come to a close. Attending this year were 180 contestants of the five educational tracks (Programming and IT, Data- and Cybersecurity, Big Data, Robotics, and Photonics) of the national student competition “I am a Professional”. Over the course of five days, the students took part in project work to find a solution to topical social and infrastructural issues with the help of modern technologies. All project work topics went under the common banner of “campus life”. ITMO.NEWS reports on the projects that made it onto the winners’ podium.

  • Robot’s DNA, Biofuel Cells and Holographic Protection: SCAMT Workshop Week at ITMO

    ITMO University has recently hosted SCAMT Workshop Week, an interdisciplinary workshop aimed at helping students acquire in-depth knowledge and practical skills in chemistry and biology, as well as work on their own project in the field of modern nanotechnologies. This year, a total of ten projects were presented at the workshop. Among the highlights are a nano-pharmaceutical drug, a holographic  protection  system, and a robot’s DNA. Organized at ITMO for the second time, the event brought together 55 Bachelor’s and Master’s students from 18 regions of Russia, as well as Ukraine and Belarus.

  • Entrepreneurial Culture: A Look Into the New General Course at ITMO

    The past semester at ITMO University was marked by the introduction of a new set of core disciplines called Entrepreneurial Culture. As part of the initiative, 1,800 out of all 2,500 first-year Master’s students attended the course “Project Management” taught by 30+ staff members of ITMO’s Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations (FTMI) and the Institute of Entrepreneurship, professional trainers and entrepreneurs.

  • Staking on Unique: ITMO’s Startup Accelerator Revamps its Approach

    This September, ITMO University’s business accelerator Future Technologies has switched to a new working format. Instead of banking on short-term acceleration programs that didn’t fully cater to each individual startup’s distinctive features and needs, FT’s novel plan involves experts and startup teams interacting on a one-on-one basis. There are some changes to the participation rules, too; any project big or small can now apply for the Future Technologies’ resident status and work its way up from developing product prototypes to upscaling the company.

  • Online Farmers Market and Students with Jobs: SumIT School Winning Projects

    Last week, ITMO University’s Entrepreneurship Center hosted a Demo Day, marking the conclusion of the SumIT international summer school for startups. Over the course of two weeks, promising entrepreneurs from Russia, Croatia, and Cameroon received intensive training in customer development, business process modelling, marketing and PR, met with leading entrepreneurs and business experts, participated in workshops, and prepared to showcase their startups to a wider audience. The Demo Day saw the summer school participants present their projects to guests and judges.
