  • Physicists Proposed Fast Method for Printing Nanolasers From Perovskites

    An international research team has developed a new method of synthesizing miniature light sources. It is based on a special laser which produces millions of nanolasers from a perovskite film in a few minutes. Such lasers look like small disks, work at room temperature and have a tunable emission wavelength from 550 to 800 nm. The high speed and good reproducibility of this method make it promising for the industrial production of single nanolasers as well as whole chains. The study was published in ACS Nano.

  • ITMO Scientists Created a Surface Allowing Loss-Free Propagation and Management of Light

    Physicists from ITMO University have developed the first synthetic dielectric surface where the propagation of electromagnetic waves isn’t hampered by existing defects and can be manipulated. In the future, such a structure will enable the creation of more reliable optical devices and communication circuits. The findings were published in Applied Physics Letters. The project was supported by the Russian Science Foundation.

  • Chemists 'Print' Sensors for Nano-Objects

    Young scientists from ITMO University proposed a new type of optical nano-sensors. Their operating principle is based on the interaction of light in thin films: a similar effect can be observed in soap bubbles. Such sensors can be quickly manufactured using an inkjet printer and special ink made of titanium dioxide. In the future, the sensors can be used for rapid biomedical analysis. The results are published in Nanoscale.

  • Analyzing Metagenome Helps Understand the Role of Bacterial Species in Crohn’s Disease

    Research on gut metagenome of patients with Crohn’s disease helped study how it influences the functional composition of gut microbiota. Among the most common changes are the decrease in the diversity of useful microbes and the increase in the amount of Escherichia coli and other microbes associated with inflammation. Such data can help better understand the causes and progress of the disease, as well as choose efficient treatment. The research was published in BMC Genomics.

  • Scientists Propose a Fully Optical Method for Near-Field Reshaping and Enhancement in Hybrid Metal-Dielectric Oligomers

    Scientists from ITMO University in collaboration with researchers from Saint Petersburg Academic University have developed a fully optical method that allows to reconfigure the properties of hybrid metal-dielectric oligomers in the near field. This offers a simpler and cheaper alternative to the existing methods of working with such structures. The use of metal-dielectric oligomers has a lot of potential for developing new data recording devices, as well as in sensor science. The research was published in Laser & Photonics Reviews.

  • Chemists From ITMO University Created New Diagnostic Method for Difficult Climate Conditions

    Scientists from the SCAMT Laboratory of ITMO University developed a method to detect viral RNA without special equipment. The sensor is based on a polymerization reaction: if the sample contains traces of the target virus, then under the ultraviolet irradiation the liquid-sensor turns into a gel. The results of such an analysis can easily be detected even by people with limited vision. As the required reagents are widely available and resistant to temperature extremes, the method can be used in difficult field conditions. The results are published in RSC Advances.

  • Scientists Propose Tractor Beam Concept to Capture Particles Using Light

    Physicists from ITMO University have developed a model of an optical tractor beam able to capture particles based on new artificial materials. Such a beam is capable of moving particles or cells towards the radiation source. The study showed that hyperbolic metasurfaces have great potential for experiments on the creation of the tractor beam, as well as for its practical applications. The results have been published in ACS Photonics.

  • Russian Developers Created a Platform for Interactive Analysis of Metagenomic Data

    A team of developers from Skolkovo, ITMO University and MIPT presented an online service called Knomics-Biota, which allows for a comprehensive study of intestinal microbiome genetic data. Using this service, you can figure out what types of bacteria are present in hundreds of gut metagenomes, their relative proportion, and the amount of vitamins and other beneficial substances they produce. With the help of an interactive interface, you can look at the results from different perspectives, which helps to identify the relationship between microbiota and nutrition, lifestyle and health. The research was published in BioData Mining.
