    Andrey Stankevich got into programming when he was still in school; in the 90s, before he even had his own computer, he already read computer science books and took computer classes. As a student at ITMO, he twice became the winner of ICPC, the world’s most prestigious programming competition. After graduating and becoming a lecturer, he took up coaching. Under his leadership, ITMO University’s team became the world’s only seven-time ICPC champion. We spoke to Andrey to find out about the differences between academic teaching and coaching, getting students to engage with complex topics, and why teaching is more than a vocation.

  • Russian Team Takes Three Gold Medals at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2021)

    Like last year, the 33rd International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2021) was held online and brought together a record number of participants: 300 school students from 88 countries. The Russian team took home one silver and three gold medals and became one of the competition’s leaders alongside the teams from the USA, China, and Singapore. The team was headed by Andrey Stankevich, an associate professor at ITMO’s Faculty of Information Technologies and Programming.

  • Russian Team Scores Resounding Victory at First European Girls' Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI 2021)

    A team of Russian school students helmed by an ITMO coach has demonstrated brilliant results at EGOI 2021. All of the team members Daria Grekova, Ekaterina Poray, Alisa Gladchenko, and Ekaterina Shilyaeva – brought home gold medals. Alisa Gladchenko and Ekaterina Shilyaeva also took the top two spots on the competition’s leaderboard.

  • RAEX Ranking 2020: ITMO University Rated Russia’s First in Computer Science

    The RAEX rating agency has published its latest annual subject rankings of scientific productivity and invention (patent) activity among Russian universities. ITMO University is included in the top 10 of both rankings. The University also came first out of all Russian universities in the subject ranking for computer science and in a narrower field of hardware architecture.

    In 2015, ITMO University alum Arseniy Seroka and his Riga-based colleague Jonn Mostovoy founded a company that has now grown to 60 people. The team doesn’t have an office, rigid working hours or a dress code – today, Serokell is powered by specialists from different parts of the world, living in different timezones. Such an unconventional structure doesn’t hinder the company from growth and development, supporting ITMO’s international “Computer Technologies” laboratory, and leading research projects at the university.   • ITMO University Launches Public Discussion on Proposed Changes to School Curricula in Computer Science

    This year, ITMO University became a developer of the draft contents of core curricula for basic general (grades fifth to ninth) and secondary general education in the field of computer science. The work is implemented on the commission of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. Until December 9, 2019, teachers and heads of education institutions can analyze the university’s suggestions and give their own evaluation and feedback on the project.
