ITMO University and Yandex Launch New Master’s Program in Data Analytics
ITMO University and Yandex will start training data analysis specialists. The Master’s program in Data Analytics is set to launch in the new academic year, but applications are already open. Students have the opportunity to be awarded with two diplomas: one from ITMO University and another from Yandex’s Computer Science Center. Read on to learn more about the program.

GIS for Beginners: How to Start Working with Maps and Why Do it in the First Place
Recently, an open workshop “Cartography for those who’ve never done it before” was hosted in St. Petersburg. Its participants familiarized themselves with the main operation principles of the free map-making service QGIS, learned to work with existing geospatial data and display it on maps. The workshop was given by Maria Podkorytova, an engineer at the Quality of Urban Life Laboratory (QULLAB) of ITMO University’s Institute of Design & Urban Studies.

Digital Humanities Week: Physicist and Mathematician Ivan Yamshchikov on the Use of Algorithms in Humanities Research
ITMO University is currently hosting the SPBDH Week Digital Humanities Week, which features lectures, discussions and workshops on interdisciplinary communications and research. Opening the event was physicist and mathematician Ivan Yamshchikov, who presented his research on the topic of “Data Analysis, Reproducibility and Living People”. Must-Have for Drivers: New Development by ITMO Scientists Will Make Car Trips Safer
ITMO University scientists have developed a mobile app that monitors drivers’ condition. When the system detects the signs of sleepiness or inattentiveness, it immediately follows back with recommendations on steps to take to avoid possible collisions. New Master’s Program ‘Data, Culture and Visualization’ at ITMO University: Digital Humanities for Everyone
ITMO University is launching the new Master’s program Data, Culture and Visualization, designed for humanities specialists interested in learning about data analysis and for IT specialists who’d like to start working with humanities data. In the process, students will get to work on projects with some of the program’s partners in the industry: tech companies, museums, and theaters. Upon graduation, they will have an opportunity to work in digital marketing, social media and market research, cultural heritage management, and other modern creative fields.

WiDS Conference: How Data Science Helps Do Business and Identify Rare Diseases

European University’s Nikita Lomagin: How IT is Changing Historical Science
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Leningrad from the 872-day siege by the Nazi Germany. ITMO University was one of the venues of a nation-wide academic conference dedicated to this occasion. Even today, historians continue to study the circumstances of one of the 20th century’s greatest tragedies. Nikita Lomagin, a Russian historian, leading expert on the Siege of Leningrad, and a professor of the European University at St. Petersburg, studies the social and economic aspects of that period. In an interview with for ITMO.NEWS, he spoke about the scientific methods of history, the benefits IT offers to historians, and why we must discover new forms of representing historical knowledge.

How the RENOIR Project Untangles the Chaos of Social Media and Why It Matters
What can data from blogs and social networks tell us about their users? Is it possible to develop mechanisms that will allow us to identify fake information? Specialists from a dozen universities and organizations from all around the world are solving these issues as part of the RENOIR project. How Researchers Use Big Data to Fight HIV and Addiction
Georgiy Bobashev is a Fellow at the RTI International (USA), an independent, nonprofit research institute. Today, the institute uses Big Data analysis to study various aspects of life in the USA, primarily those concerning healthcare. Researchers work on issues related to drug addiction, medical products, the propagation of diseases such as HIV or diabetes, and other topics. Georgiy Bobashev has recently come to ITMO University for an open lecture and spoke to ITMO.NEWS about his experience with analyzing medical data, what socially significant research is being done in the USA right now, and which scientific methods give us answers to some of the most important questions.
