  • 60,000 Steps a Day: ITMO Students on Organizing Mendeleev-150 Conference

    What’s it like to take part in organizing a major international conference as a first-year student? How do you communicate with scientists from the world over and solve an avalanche of issues in mere hours? This July, ITMO University was home to the 4th International Conference on the Periodic Table, which brought together renowned chemists, physicists, educators, and historians of chemistry from Russia, the US, the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, China, and other countries. The event’s organizing committee was comprised, in part, of students of ITMO’s School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems, who spoke to ITMO.NEWS about their experience and their future plans.

  • International Olympiad in Informatics 2018 Winners: Even If You’re Tired, Don’t Lose Sight of Your Goals

    This September, Russian school students managed to win not one, but four prizes at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Japan. Two members of the winning team, golden and silver medalists Ramazan Rakhmatullin from Kazan and Mikhail Anoprenko from St. Petersburg, have now enrolled at ITMO University’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, where they continue their training under the associate professor Andrey Stankevich and dream of one day becoming champions of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. ITMO.NEWS met the students to find out how to get into programming, why you shouldn’t give up if you haven’t made it to an international competition on your first try, and how being a contestant can come in handy in everyday life.

  • ‘I Want to Create Something that Really Matters’: ITMO University’s First-Year Student On Developing Socially Significant Apps

    Artur Shaikhatarov is ITMO University first-year student who has already come up with two mobile apps aimed at helping people with special needs communicate. Having won a host of scientific conferences and contests in his home Bashkortostan, Artur continues to develop his innovative projects in Moscow. But he chose St. Petersburg as his study destination. ITMO.NEWS met the programming whizzkid to discover what was the motivation behind his projects, what was his school experience like, and why he decided to pursue his education in St. Petersburg.

  • ITMO.GO: Thousands of First-Year Students Join ITMO University

    ITMO.GO is an annual event for welcoming new members to the ITMO.FAMILY, a community of staff, students, graduates, partners, and friends of ITMO University. This year’s celebration was attended by more than 5,000 people including ITMO Bachelor's, Master's and PhD  first-year students. Keeping totradition, the grandiose open-air event was held at the square in front of the Baltic House theater in the verdured setting of Alexandrovsky park. The festivity was as fun as it was informative; ITMO newcomers not only had the chance to let their hair down before the start of their new academic adventure, but also learned about the exciting opportunities the university offers, enrolled into ITMO’s artistic and sport clubs, and enjoyed a virtual bike ride with the Rector.
