  • Roger Roger: How to Make Websites Understand Their Users

    How and why should we communicate with websites using our voice? What are screen-readers and how do they make websites more accessible? Are there any specifications and APIs for voice synthesis and recognition? These questions were answered by Alexey Okhrimenko, MALEVICH design pattern author, Angular Moscow tech meetups organizer, and content creator at the 5 Minutes of Angular podcast. His presentation took place as part of the Web Standard Days conference which was hosted by ITMO University last week. Previously held in Moscow and St. Petersburg, this event has gone global and now also takes place in Minsk, Riga, and Kiev.

  • Gennady Korotkevich Wins Google Code Jam For The Fifth Time

    Just recently, the Google Code Jam international coding competition ended in Toronto. For the fifth time in a row, it was ITMO student Gennady Korotkevich who took the winning title, having beat his immediate competitors: Kamil Debowski from Poland and Makoto Soejima from Japan. Each year, over 50,000 programmers from all over the world participate in the event.

  • ITMO.EXPERT Project Lets Educators Share Digital Teaching Experience

    ITMO University has launched the ITMO. EXPERT  project, aimed at helping teachers use digital technology in their work and make the educational process more effective. Some of ITMO’s academic staff have already taken part in three courses so far: digital tools, teamwork, and game technology in education.

  • "Digital Jungle": How To Get an Internship at Your Dream Company, Get a Job at Google and Survive in the IT World

    “Digital Jungle” is the festival for students and their parents, as well as those wanting to change their job, that was held in St. Petersburg last Sunday. This year the festival took place at ITMO University where everyone could learn about the evolution of human-machine interfaces and the development of modern cities, get practical knowledge and talk to the developers of VKontakte, Wargaming, JetBrains, as well as try one’s hand in the CS:GO tournament.   • Programmer Daria Yakovleva: "You shouldn’t be afraid to try something new"

    Computer science isn’t just about knowing how to design algorithms, analyse data or work with functions. First and foremost, it is about creativity, which computer scientists use to solve problems that no one has solved before and to improve both household and industrial processes. Today’s Master’s programs don’t teach theoretical knowledge – Bachelor’s programs should cover that. In Master’s programs students are taught how to apply this knowledge in practice, says Daria Yakovleva, Master’s student from ITMO’s Department of Computer Technologies. We spoke to Daria about taking part in internships, competitions and activities at the university and how that can help one’s future career.

  • Gennady Korotkevich Wins Google Code Jam Fourth Time in a Row

    ITMO University’s Master’s student Gennady Korotkevich has set a new record as the four-time winner of the international programming competition Google Code Jam. Evgeny Kapun, a PhD student at ITMO, took 5th place. The final round of the competition took place in Dublin on 11th August and lasted four hours. One day earlier, the Distributed Code Jam competition was also held in Ireland, in which Evgeny Kapun took second place, and Pavel Mavrin, a tutor at the Computer Technology Department at ITMO, took fourth place
