  • ITMO Scientists Discover Universal Measure to Predict Protein Folding

Researchers from ITMO’s Infochemistry Scientific Center have suggested an algorithm that can calculate a molecule’s dimensionality – whether it’s 2D, 3D, or an intermediate state. Unlike other existing methods, the new one allows scientists to identify the folding state in biomolecules and track its progress. In an article published in Royal Society Open Science, the researchers described their molecular dynamics-based method and compared it to others, such as the Monte Carlo simulation and the widely used AlphaFold algorithm.

  • ITMO Scientists First to Propose Binary Antisense Agent for Cancer Treatment

A research team from ITMO’s ChemBio Cluster and the University of Central Florida has developed a binary antisense oligonucleotide (a short DNA molecule produced by chemical synthesis) that consists of two oligonucleotide chains. As one part of the chain targets a tumor marker and the other – a vital housekeeping gene, the technology allows scientists to target cancer cells without harming the healthy ones.

  • Researchers Propose New Multipolar Lattices for Improved Metasurfaces

Scientists from ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics have predicted a unique type of bound states in the continuum – one that is completely resistant to changes in the system parameters. This would allow researchers to control the resonance properties of metasurfaces and, eventually, to develop more efficient optical and optoelectronic devices of the next generation. The corresponding paper received special recognition from the editors of Physical Review B (Letter) and was published in the section Editor’s Suggestion.
