New Life for Bakery Waste: First Results of Russian-Finnish-Italian Project Wastebake
Last year, the specialists from ITMO University (Russia), the University of Bari (Italy), and the University of Helsinki (Finland) started working on a joint project as part of the EuroTransBio international funding initiative. The purpose of the project is to find a way to recycle bakery waste. During the first meeting held in Italy in 2018, the project’s participants discussed its key stages and identified priority areas. Environmental Education of Students: Joint Project by Russia, Finland, Sweden and Latvia

Environmental Scientist Jaana Sorvari on Sustainable Waste Management in Europe and Russia
Jaana Sorvari, a professor at Aalto University (Finland) and researcher at the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), has come to ITMO University to deliver the intensive course “Environmental Risk Assessment in Waste Management.” During the course, Master’s students from the program Industrial Ecology and Cleaner Production learned about Europe and Finland’s experience of sustainable waste management. ITMO.NEWS spoke with Prof. Sorvari about the challenges currently faced by Europe in terms of waste management and learned why excessive consumption is an issue not only in Russia, but even in eco-friendly Scandinavian states.

Urban Change Week: Do Your Bit to Change the City for the Better
Quick notifications about environmental disasters, peer-to-peer information about coffee shops and bakeries, a catalog of trees, and a map of the city’s emotions and urban problems… With the use of geoinformation systems, you can gather data about literally everything concerning urban development. Public participation geographic information systems (GIS) combine the advantages of online surveys and public maps. Such public maps indicate, for example, that over the last 30 years, about 50% of trees in St. Petersburg have been cut out, replaced with recycling drop-off centers and problematic areas. As part of the Urban Change Week held in St. Petersburg on April 17-20, project managers discussed the issue of blind spots and cars supplanting trees, and why it is important to report city problems. ITMO Launches New Master’s Program ‘Bioeconomics and Resource Management’

ITMO and University of Bologna Cooperate in Science and Education
How is recycling organized in Italy, what is transition engineering all about, and how can its principles be applied to the operation of Russian companies in order to form a really effective recycling management system? Anastasia Pavlova, senior lecturer at the Department of Industrial Ecology and Safety, is working on a project that manages raw materials and wastes from the food industry, which answers these questions. She recently won an Italian government grant and has gone to the University of Bologna - the country's second largest university and the oldest educational establishment in Europe. In the course of her internship, not only does Anastasia plan to study Italian practices, but also enhance cooperation with Italian universities.

EduEnvi: Education in Sustainable Waste Management in Russia and Kazakhstan
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment of the Russian Federation, the amount of waste from production and consumption in Russia totaled 5 billion tonnes last year. The statistics indicate that only 50% of waste is recovered, and only 7-8% of waste is recycled. There is no waste management system in any of the regions, and existing educational programs in the field of environmental protection are generally insufficient or ineffective. Six Russian and Kazakh universities are collaborating with universities in Finland, Denmark, and Spain to solve this problem. The developers of the project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Program, are going to launch eight online courses in biotechnologies and waste management. The project will last for three years, and the courses may become part of several universities’ Master's programs.
