  • High School Laboratories for Nanotechnologies

    In early 2018, ITMO’s resident NT-SPb finished equipping five regional quantoriums with their products. These new “High School Laboratories for Nanotechnology” will become a space for high school students to study a new field of science, as well as conduct interdisciplinary projects that stem from real nanoindustry tasks. Aleksander Golubok, Professor at the Department of Nano-Photonics and Metamaterials, and Ivan Mukhin, Research Fellow at the Metamaterials Laboratory, talk about high-tech equipment that is safe for children, the new School Laboratories for Nanotechnologies and the prospects of this new undertaking.

  • New Semester At The Children's University

    It is the start of the spring semester of the Children's University - an educational project for primary and secondary school students. Up until the mid-May, lecturers from leading educational establishments, including ITMO University, will train its participants on a weekly basis. Some of the educators who have already tried themselves as lecturers for the project shared about how it helps get children involved in science.

  • Tournament of Two Capitals: Promoting Robotics To The Young

    The second Tournament of Two Capitals, a robotics competition that brings together school students from St. Petersburg and Moscow, has recently taken place at ITMO University. Select teams from Russia’s two capitals competed in four categories, as well as the secret “Fifth Element” challenge. This time, the perpetual trophy went to Moscow. ITMO.NEWS learned how the competition contributes to promoting robotics and how different teams train for it.

  • Tournament of Two Capitals: Schoolkids Show Off Robotics Skills at Regionals

    The regional qualifying stage of the "Tournament of the Two Capitals", a robotics competition for schoolchildren, took place in St. Petersburg on November 26. More than a hundred teams built autonomous robots, which raced on a “highway”, built bridges, balanced on a swing and played "King of the Hill". On the same day, a regional qualifying stage of T2C was also held in Moscow. Teams that showed the best results in both cities will meet in mid-December at the tournament’s finals at ITMO University.

  • RoboFinist Festival: Teaching Robotics to Kids

    Teachers and educators from all over the country gathered at the International Robotics Festival RoboFinist to discuss how to teach robotics in schools and make children interested in engineering and programming. The festival’s program included a roundtable discussion on the international experience in educational robotics, a symposium and competitions in several dozen categories. At the event, ITMO University had its own area where visitors could try out 3D-pens, look at holograms and get involved in childrens’ robotics.

    60 years ago, Earth's first artificial satellite was launched; four years later, the first man followed it to space. At that time, almost every student dreamt of becoming an astronaut. Times have changed, but even now many students believe that the future belongs to space exploration and robotics.   • Teen in Tech Workshop: Best Projects by Young Developers

    Last Friday, the participants of the three-day TeeninTech intensive course presented their graduation projects to an expert jury. Teen in Tech is a technological entrepreneurship school for teenagers organized by ITMO's Center for the Promotion of Youth Innovation and Technological Entrepreneurship and Project Management and Innovation Department. ITMO.NEWS learned about the projects the young developers have been working on.

  • ITMO Team Wins First Place at National Robotics Olympiad

    From June 23 to 25 the final stage of the Russian Olympiad in Programming of Intelligent Robotic Systems was held for the fourth time in the city of Innopolis (Republic of Tatarstan). The Olympiad features contestants from all over the country and thus serves as the Russian qualification round for the World Robot Olympiad. ITMO University’s team and their forest pathologist robot Forester secured the first place in one of the competition’s categories.

  • Laser Tech Summer School: Graduates Share Their Experience

    The school program pays little attention to lasers even though laser technologies are now very important in the fields of medicine, IT, robotics, space technology and many other applied sciences. ITMO University’s Laser Technology Summer School remedies this disparity: there, high schoolers can learn about the potential that laser technology has in today’s world, how it works and what future awaits those who start a career in laser optics. 36 Summer School graduates have just finished the course last week.   • Youth in Science: Summer Internship in Photonics and Optical IT

    The Summer Internship has begun at ITMO University’s Department of Photonics and Optical Information Technologies. For two weeks, tenth-graders will acquaint themselves with the latest research in the fields of quantum information, biomedicine, femtosecond optics and other innovative sciences. The high-schoolers will work with scientists on actual research, start their own project and will soon be able to take part in prestigious conferences for experts in photonics and optical IT.
