• ITMO Graduate Wins National Theses Competition

  Vadim Rybin, a Bachelor's graduate of the Faculty of Photonics and Optical Information, won the national competition of theses called Be First in the Physics and Astronomy category. Now, Vadim is pursuing a Master’s degree. He discussed his thesis and scientific interests with ITMO.NEWS, and also told us how he created the “It’s a trap” student club, whose members are engaged in the study of ion traps.

• Introduction Days 2020: Welcoming New Students

  From August 31 to September 4, 2020, ITMO University hosted Introduction Days (link in Russian) for first-year Bachelor’s and Master’s students. The event was created last year to introduce new students to the university’s system, the opportunities it offers – and above all, each other. ITMO.GO, a large-scale celebration traditionally marks the end of the introductory block.

  Every student who has ever been on exchange knows how hard it can be to adapt to the new surroundings, get all your papers sorted, and adjust to the new timetable and academic process. It’s important to have someone you can ask for help at this time, a friendly face you can look for in a crowd of your new fellow students – and that is where buddies come in to save the day. At ITMO, these are found in Buddy System, a student club whose manager, Anna Gargalyk, I caught up with for this interview.

• ITMakeup: Beauty, Self-Acceptance and Online Makeup Tutorials

  ITMakeup, a student club dedicated to promoting self-acceptance and educating its members on how to use makeup in their everyday life, faced a unique challenge in recent times. As the university went online, it had to figure out how to engage with its members remotely, when everything was already in place for in-person beauty sessions.
