  • ITMO Master’s Student on ECNP Workshop in Nice

    Vladimir Romanov is a Master’s student at ITMO University’s Faculty of Food Biotechnologies and Engineering. At the beginning of March, he went to Nice (France) to take part in a three-day workshop for young scientists hosted by the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP). The goal of this workshop is to promote experimental and clinical research of brain disorders and their treatment. During the workshop, the student presented his research on the correlation between vitamin D deficiency and depression in postmenopausal women. ITMO.NEWS talked to Vladimir about his research and discussed how vitamin D can increase the efficiency of hormone replacement therapy.

  • The Alchemy of Silk: Bioart Pioneer Joe Davis’s Workshop by The Polytechnic Museum and SkBioLab

    What is BioArt? Which kinds of projects does it include? And how can their results be applied in research? These and other topics were discussed at a workshop by Joe Davis, a legendary artist, pioneer of BioArt and staff member of MIT, Harvard Medical School and the University of Kentucky. Two students from ITMO University participated in the event organized by the Polytechnic Museum and SkBioLab with support from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. ITMO.NEWS talked to the students about working with transgenic silk and applying biology in the field of Art&Science.

  • Novgorod State University Hosts ITMO.REGIONS Innovation Weekend

    Last weekend, Novgorod State University hosted an intensive workshop on strategy and project management, which was given by ITMO University experts as part of the interregional network program of the ITMO.REGIONS startup school. The event was supported by the University of the National Technology Initiative (NTI) 2035. ITMO specialists provided insight into best practices of creating an efficient ecosystem for supporting innovation entrepreneurship in universities and shared topical how-tos and practical skills with aspiring student entrepreneurs and scientists.

  • UC San Diego Assistant Professor on Latest Software Development Trends

    ITMO graduate and assistant professor at the University of California, San Diego Nadezhda Polikarpova has recently held a workshop where she talked about her research in the field of program synthesis. ITMO’s ‘Computer Technologies’ international laboratory PhD students and staff had the chance to participate. Increasing programming languages and tools efficiency is a subject of ongoing research pursued by scientists all over the world; especially important is the issue of software engineering automation. Nadezhda explores this topical question together with her UC San Diego research group, but that is also one of ITMO University scientists’ areas of expertise.   • SimCity IRL: How Citizens Help Urban Developers by Playing Board Games

    City dwellers often don’t have the chance to express their support or opposition to various urban development initiatives. And it’s not because there’s a lack of ways to do that, but that people may find it difficult to express their ideas. One way to solve this problem is to use a game-based approach, suggests Milena Ivkovic, an architect, game designer and head of Rotterdam-based company Blok74. She offers urban residents to play games as a way of showing the environment they’d like to inhabit in a simple, informal setting. Ms. Ivkovic explained her game-making process during a recent workshop at ITMO’s Institute of Design and Urban Science.

  • Winter School “It’s Your Call!”: Leading Experts’ Lectures, Semi-Hackathon and Chess Pong.

    From January 29 to February 3, 2018 ITMO is going to host Winter School "It’s Your Call!". The winter school is intended for all the participants of the All-Russian Students' Competition "I am a Professional", which started in November 2017, and other motivated students from all over the country. Bachelor’s and Master’s students who participated in the above-mentioned competition in the fields of "Computer Science", "Information and Cyber ​​Security" and "Photonics" will be able to take part in the Winter School. The organizers have prepared a huge program for them, which includes lectures and workshops from leading experts at ITMO, Yandex , Kaspersky Lab, Sberbank and other organizations, excursions to specialized laboratories and companies, Semi-Hackathon, Chess Pong and other activities.   • Blockchain: New Word in Banking

    As part of the new partnership program between ITMO University and Otkritie Bank, a workshop by the bank’s Director of Innovations Alexei Blagirev was held on July 11. The businessman spoke about following the KYC (Know Your Customer) principle through use of blockchain technology and why it is one of the first steps towards self-management in banking industry that will lead to a new form of interaction between credit institutions.
