  • Digital Humanities Week: Physicist and Mathematician Ivan Yamshchikov on the Use of Algorithms in Humanities Research

    ITMO University is currently hosting the SPBDH Week Digital Humanities Week, which features lectures, discussions and workshops on interdisciplinary communications and research. Opening the event was physicist and mathematician Ivan Yamshchikov, who presented his research on the topic of “Data Analysis, Reproducibility and Living People”. The researcher also expanded on the use of algorithms and data analysis in humanities research. ITMO.NEWS publishes the highlights of the lecture.

  • Scientists Propose an Inkjet Printing Technology for Battery Elements to Make Them Compact and Flexible

    A group of St. Petersburg scientists has proposed a new method of manufacturing electrodes for lithium-ion batteries that power laptops, smartphones and tablets. The researchers have shown that these elements can be printed on an inkjet printer, which will reduce the electrodes’ thickness by 10–20 times and open up new opportunities for manufacturers of compact electronics. Their article has been published in the journal Energy Technology.

  • Scientists Create Listeriosis-Immune Mice by Turning off Gene in Myeloid Cells

    An international research team that includes specialists from ITMO University has conducted a series of experiments with the goal of studying the immune system and identifying the genes and proteins involved in the response to certain harmful bacteria. The scientists found that “turning off” a gene responsible for the production of the protein Beclin 1, or the gene that produces the FIP200 protein, resulted in the test animals becoming nearly completely immune to the infectious disease listeriosis. The results of this research have been published in Nature Microbiology.

  • Scientists Studied Hybrid Nanoparticles Capable of Generating Broadband Radiation

    An international group of scientists from Russia, Germany and France, including those from ITMO University, conducted a large research at the intersection of materials science and photonics. The research is dedicated to the study of a hybrid nanostructure, a plasmonic golden sponge (Au), the pores of which are filled with crystalline silicon (Si). The peculiarity of this material is that when excited by a laser beam, nanostructures generate broadband radiation which covers the visible range of the spectrum and partially the near-infrared range. The hybrid nanostructure can be used in broadband near-field microscopy. The results of the research and its application prospects have been published in the Nanoscale journal.

  • International Team of Scientists Discover New Phenomenon in Topological Physics

    While doing research on photonic topological insulators, an international team of scientists including physicists from ITMO University succeeded in providing an experimental proof of models that were only theoretically described before, as well as discovering a completely new phenomenon. This work, which received partial support from the Russian Science Foundation and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, opens a new field in the research of topological insulators and can potentially help create highly efficient microelectronic devices. The article was published in Nature Photonics.

  • Physicists Trap Light in Nanoresonators for Record Time

    An international team of researchers from ITMO University, the Australian National University, and Korea University have experimentally trapped an electromagnetic wave in a gallium arsenide nanoresonator a few hundred nanometers in size for a record-breaking time. Earlier attempts to trap light for such a long time have only been successful with much larger resonators. In addition, the researchers have provided experimental proof that this resonator may be used as a basis for an efficient light frequency nanoconverter. The results of this research have raised great interest among the scientific community and were published in Science, one of the world’s leading academic journals. Scientists have suggested drastically new opportunities for subwavelength optics and nanophotonics – including the development of compact sensors, night vision devices, and optical data transmission technologies.

  • Pharmacological Constructor: Scientists Propose Method for Synthesising Calcium Carbonate Particles with Different Geometry for Targeted Drug Delivery

    A group of scientists from ITMO’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering in collaboration with their colleagues from the First Pavlov State Medical University of St. Petersburg and Tel Aviv University conducted a complex analysis of the growth conditions of porous particles of calcium carbonate of various morphology that can be used for delivering bioactive substances to cells and tissue. The samples were tested on a model of glioma cells. The results were published in ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering. ITMO.NEWS contacted Landysh Fatkhutdinova, a Master’s student at ITMO’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering, and her research advisor Mikhail Zyuzin, and learned about the prospects of the research’s application in biology and medicine.

  • ITMO University Researchers Create Complex Nanoparticles with Laser Impulses

    An international research group including ITMO University specialists has experimentally demonstrated a method of generating complex nanoparticles that can be applied in nanophotonics for light adjustment purposes. It has the potential to change the way such materials are produced today and reduce the price of nanoparticle production, which would foster the development of microelectronics. The paper was published in Advanced Functional Materials.

  • St. Petersburg Scientists Create Transparent Self-Cleaning Bactericidal Displays

    A research group from St. Petersburg including ITMO University specialists demonstrated a new transparent material that can be applied to screens of portable electronic devices. This self-cleaning material can destroy all the disease-causing bacteria on its surface and can, therefore, also be used in medicine. The discovery and its methodology were published in Materials Today Communications.
