Building A New Generation of Drugs: SCAMT Laboratory Scientists On Rational Chemical Design Using Metal-Organic Frameworks
Aimed at creating materials with pre-planned properties, rational design has become one of the most prevalent research trends in chemistry. Its advocates postulate that instead of going through the exhaustive search of random combinations, a better strategy for finding the right material would be to start with analysing the structural elements and the interactions that occur between them. This will lead to significant reductions in the effort, time, and money needed for creating new drugs or purification systems. Following their paper on framework materials that was published in Russian Chemical Reviews, ITMO University’s SCAMT Laboratory scientists met with ITMO.NEWS to talk about their research.

Study Reveals The Great Pyramid of Giza Can Focus Electromagnetic Energy
An international research group applied methods of theoretical physics to study the electromagnetic response of the Great Pyramid to radio waves. Scientists found out that under resonance conditions the pyramid can concentrate electromagnetic energy both in its internal chambers and the area located under its base. The research group plans to apply these findings to design nanoparticles capable of reproducing similar effects in the optical range. Such nanoparticles may be used to develop sensors and highly efficient solar cells. The study was published in the Journal of Applied Physics.

Physicists Design New Nanoresonators With Giant Nonlinear Response
An international research team has found a way to make frequency conversion of light at the nanoscale a hundred times more efficient. The new method is based on isolated dielectric nanoparticles supporting the so-called bound states in the continuum. Such states appear when radiating fields in the particle suppress each other, so that the electromagnetic energy inside the particle can be trapped. This prediction can be employed for a new generation of tiny frequency conversion devices, nanolasers. The research was published in Physical Review Letters on July 19, 2018 as a cover story.

ITMO Young Scientists Win BASIS Foundation Grants For Physics and Maths Research
This year’s list of winners of grants from the BASIS Foundation for the Advancement of Theoretical Physics and Mathematics includes six representatives of ITMO University. These are research associates Andrei Bogdanov and Maxim Gorlach, and PhD students Daniil Kornovan , Kirill Koshelev, Nikita Olekhno and Zarina Sadrieva from the Department of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials. The BASIS foundation is a successor of Dmitry Zimin’s Dynasty Foundation that concluded its activity in 2015. Many former holders of Dynasty scholarships, like ITMO members Andrei Bogdanov and Alexander Poddubny, are currently holders of BASIS scholarships.

Scientists Register Strong Toroidal Dipole Response In Wide Frequency Range
Physicists have managed to create an experimental structure with a strong toroidal dipole response of the electromagnetic field over a wide frequency range. This response is associated with a special configuration of electromagnetic currents causing high concentration of the field. A special dielectric metalattice was created to produce and measure the response. The results can be used to create non-scattering materials, as well as to effectively control electromagnetic fields. The research was published in Advanced Optical Materials.

The IEEE Photonics Society has announced the results of its annual Graduate Student Fellowship Award, and for the first time ever two ITMO University scientists made the list.
