  • ITMO University Hosts Final Round of NTI Competition for University Students

    On April 18, the results of the Competition of the National Technology Initiative were announced at ITMO University. The event brought together students from St. Petersburg, Moscow, Novosibirsk and Irkutsk, who had three days to solve three tasks focusing on such topics as mathematical statistics, machine learning algorithms, and distributed computing infrastructure. The winners of the competition will receive an opportunity to enroll in one of ITMO’s Master’s programs without needing to take entrance exams, as well as receive a paid internship at the University’s research laboratories.

  • Data-Driven Medicine: How Patients May Become Their Own Doctors

    Georgy Kopanitsa has worked as an expert on data-driven medicine at the Tomsk Polytechnic University and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. According to his estimates, in just a few years new medical data systems will make doctors’ work easier while reducing the cost and improving the quality of medical analysis.     In the early 2000s, Alexander Shevtsov enrolled at ITMO University’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty. In his third year, he paired up with a fellow student to start his first business; after his graduation, he developed projects in telecommunications; today, he is the head of the IT department at RN-Burenie, one of Rosneft’s key subsidiaries.   • European University’s Nikita Lomagin: How IT is Changing Historical Science

    This year marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Leningrad from the 872-day siege by the Nazi Germany. ITMO University was one of the venues of a nation-wide academic conference dedicated to this occasion. Even today, historians continue to study the circumstances of one of the 20th century’s greatest tragedies. Nikita Lomagin, a Russian historian, leading expert on the Siege of Leningrad, and a professor of the European University at St. Petersburg, studies the social and economic aspects of that period.     Individual project work is an integral part of the modern educational process, and staff members of the Faculty of Infocommunication Technologies offer their students an opportunity to try it as early as in their second year of bachelor studies.     The future of the banking industry becomes increasingly interconnected with biometric technology. Sberbank has already started implementing the latest technologies in this field and collecting its clients’ biometric data. Experts estimate that two million bank clients will use biometrics by 2020. This is the main focus of the Interface project conducted by students from ITMO’s Faculty of Infocommunication Technologies. The project even got the prize for the best creative solution at the Fintech Cup-2018 Championship.
