  • ITMO Physicists Discover New Physical Effect

    The scientists called it the anomalous exciton Hall effect. It occurs when a laser affects a semiconductor plate in the presence of a magnetic field. This phenomenon can be potentially used for studying exciton quasiparticles. The research is published in Physical Review Letters.

  • Russian Participants of European XFEL Observe and Document Never-Before-Seen Effect

    A team of ITMO University specialists and their German colleagues have successfully used the world’s largest free-electron X-ray laser to conduct an experiment on ultrafast demagnetization of ferromagnetic material using femtosecond IR excitation. While studying the dynamics of this process, the scientists had discovered a new type of X-ray scattering in ferromagnetic material, which occurs immediately after the laser pulse and lasts for some 100 picoseconds. Their findings were recently presented at the European XFEL Users’ Meeting in Hamburg, which brought together over 1,300 participants from 30 countries. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with Igor Pronin, the head of this project, who presented a plenary report on the study during the event.

  • St. Petersburg Scientists Create Transparent Self-Cleaning Bactericidal Displays

    A research group from St. Petersburg including ITMO University specialists demonstrated a new transparent material that can be applied to screens of portable electronic devices. This self-cleaning material can destroy all the disease-causing bacteria on its surface and can, therefore, also be used in medicine. The discovery and its methodology were published in Materials Today Communications.

    Nature Photonics publishes reviews of the discoveries that haven’t been written about by the Nature Publishing Group, but, according to the editors, deserve to be highlighted. Recently, an article written by the staff of ITMO University’s Laboratory of Femtosecond Optics and Femtotechnologies was featured on the list. ITMO.NEWS talked to the head of the laboratory, Anton Tsypkin, about how the discovery was made and what opportunities Nature’s acknowledgment brings.
