  • VDHAKATON Finals at ITMO: Winners Receive 1 Million Rubles for Transglutaminase Analog

    VDHAKATON2024, a hackathon focused on the development of innovative products for businesses, has concluded at ITMO University. Over six months, Master’s students of ITMO’s Faculty of Biotechnologies worked on business cases with experts from 11 international and Russian companies. Students presented their MVPs (minimally viable products) at the final day of the hackathon. The first prize was awarded for a transglutaminase analog designed to help sausages retain their shape; the team working on the Edvanta case received 1 million rubles.

  • ITMO Students Shine at VkusVill’s R&D Incubator

    Students from ITMO University have recently taken part in COLLAB 2K24, an incubator organized by VkusVill, a popular Russian grocery store chain. One team from ITMO took the second place in the dairy products track, having suggested a new high-protein yogurt with matcha powder and probiotics, while another team received the people’s choice award in the fish track after coming up with a frozen dinner option with pollack. Both teams will be improving their projects in collaboration with industry representatives to produce a test sample and then bring the new products to the shelves.

  • Smart Expiration Date Indicators Developed at ITMO

    Researchers at ITMO University have developed fluorescent, quantum dot-based indicators for smart packaging – they can detect the actual expiration date of meat, fish, and chicken. When the indicator’s glow becomes dim under UV light, the product is no longer safe for consumption. The research team behind the idea was named one of the winners of the reality show Passion for Grants, in which contestants compete for grants from the Russian Science Foundation, and secured 6 million rubles for their research.

  • AI Barista: Digital Coffee Taste Predictor To Be Developed at ITMO

    Scientists from ITMO’s Infochemistry Scientific Center are working on a digital barista, a smart system that will describe the taste of coffee grains without a human specialist. This project, developed with Siberian Federal University and business partners, is set to be used in vending coffee machines.

So, what is smart packaging and what does 3D printing have to do with it?   • Ice Cream for Stress Relief: ITMO Scientists Create Functional Food Products Using Bioactive Substances

    The modern lifestyle and the pandemic cause stress, an increased workload, and growing antibiotic resistance. In their turn, these factors lead to low immunity and diseases, including the neurodegenerative kind. Scientists from ITMO’s Faculty of Biotechnologies are working on a project that aims to solve these challenges through the application of biologically active substances in the development of new food products. The project has already received support from the Russian Science Foundation.
