• Vladimir Putin Meets ITMO PhD Students at World Youth Festival

  Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with international students pursuing their PhDs at Russian universities before the closing ceremony of the World Youth Festival. On behalf of ITMO University, the festival was attended by Fares Dia Eddine Ghorab from the Infochemistry Scientific Center and Darwesh Ghadeer from the Faculty of Secure Information Technologies.

• ITMO PhD Student Wins Entrepreneur Contest GSEA Russia 2024

  Daudi Dauddin, a PhD student at ITMO’s Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations, ranked highest in the category Breakthrough of the Year at GSEA Russia 2024, a contest for young entrepreneurs. At the contest, he presented an AI-driven service for patent registration and monitoring that will now receive support from international business communities.

• ITMO’s Advanced Engineering School Awards 1.5 Million Ruble Grants to Interdisciplinary Teams’ Tech Projects

  Advanced engineering schools have been launched across the country in 2022 as part of a federal project. Its main goal is to train principal engineers who can assemble interdisciplinary teams and use data-driven approaches to integrate new products into partner companies’ processes. ITMO’s Advanced Engineering School is part of the effort. Recently, it has awarded grants of up to 1.5 million rubles to ten interdisciplinary teams made up of ITMO Master’s and PhD students. We spoke to some of the winners about their projects and future plans.

• ITMO PhD Student Evgeny Khomutov: My Main Goal Is to Be the Best Version of Myself

  Evgeny Khomutov graduated from the corporate Master’s program operated by ITMO’s Faculty of Control Systems and Robotics and the Sberbank Robotics Laboratory. Having successfully completed a project in collaboration with the company, he decided to continue his studies as a PhD student. These days, Evgeny is developing a system that will help design gripping devices automatically making it accessible even to novices. In the future, this system can serve as a basis for more personalized (and cheaper) hand prosthetics. We asked him why it’s more interesting to work at a university and not in the industry and how robotics can help people with special needs.

  Mikhail and Alexei became friends when they were Master’s students at ITMO’s Faculty of Control Systems and Robotics.   A PhD student at ITMO’s Faculty of Physics, Adria Canos Valero was born and raised in Spain. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, where he started his international academic career. In the span of six years, Adria worked in France, Switzerland, and Moscow, did research at CERN, and went from studying chemical engineering to optics and metamaterials.
