  • ISS Simulation Software, Laser Breathalyser and Metal 3D Printer: A Tour of Laser Systems

    This year, ITMO University hosted the third winter school “It’s Your Call!” for participants of the “I am a Professional” student competition. Sberbank served as the general partner of the school that annually brings together students from all over Russia. The school consists of workshops, lectures and tours of major companies and research institutions. Last week, the participants went to Laser Systems, a high-tech company based in Strelna. There, they discovered how lasers can help make flights safer and detect the level of someone’s alcohol intoxication and saw a 3D printer working with metal powders.

  • Researchers Uncover the Moscow Subway Microbiome

    Brought together by an international project, scientists from all over the world study bacteria in various public spaces, such as the subway or the streets. Recently, a group of ITMO University researchers has looked into the microbiome of the Moscow Subway using the method already applied in other cities within the project. The research was published in Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with the scientists to ask them about the bacterial world of the Russian capital’s subway system and how it might be similar to that of New York's public transportation.

    The LADЫ sound cafe recently hosted a “serious” stand-up performance on soft skills in the 21st century.  Mikhail Kurushkin, an associate professor at the ChemBio Cluster, shared some of his personal stories and discussed some actual soft skills one might need in their career.

  • Jozef Stephan Institute’s Miha Cimperman on Data Forecasting in Rail and Energy Industries

    Miha Cimperman, a researcher from the Jožef Stefan Institute (Slovenia), has visited ITMO University within the framework of the European Union’s RENOIR project. In his lecture, he covered sensor data forecast modeling in critically important infrastructure — energy facilities and railways. Read on for the lecture’s highlights.

  • Technology as Digital Mirrors

    The media art festival MediaIN took place on the new stage of the Alexandrinsky theater from 14th to 16th of July. Visitors had the chance to admire different interactive light and sound installations and video art. ITMO.NEWS managed to get an interview with Taras Mashtalir, a media artist, composer and producer whose works were displayed during the three days of the festival. He was behind the project SONICOLOGY and created some of his works in collaboration with The Higher School of Lighting Design at ITMO University. Mashtalir also worked as a lecturer at ITMO during the last academic semester.

  • First Day of VK Fest: Sports of the Future

    St. Petersburg is host to the annual VK Fest. Bloggers, artists, athletes, craftsmen and musicians  made popular by the Internet perform onstage and hold workshops. ITMO University participates in VK Fest as well, setting up its own interactive zone. This year, the theme dominating ITMO University’s space is virtual sports. Visitors can try boxing and hang gliding, riding a bike and diving into the water - all in the same spot - just by putting on VR-goggles. Within its interactive zone, the University has also organized workshops on beginner robotics, 3D-printing, drones, gigantic spinners and hacking practices inspired by the “Mr. Robot” TV series.

  • Rusnano Head Chubais: Five New Nanotech Clusters in Russia by 2027

    In the next ten years the Russian nanoindustry will be expanded with five new technological clusters. These are: windpower, solid-waste recycling, flexible electronics, industrial energy storage and nanomodified material. They will join the six clusters that have already been established in Russia since 2007. Anatoly Chubais, head of “Rusnano”, spoke about this at an open lecture in ITMO University. During the talk he analyzed the development of the Russian nanoindustry over the last ten years and gave his forecast on the industry for the upcoming 10 years.

  • ITMO University Expands Partnership in Technology Entrepreneurship with Krasnoyarsk Krai

    Yesterday, on May 31, ITMO University was visited by a delegation headed by Viktor Tolokonsky, governor of Krasnoyarsk Krai. During a meeting with the university’s Rector Vladimir Vasilyev, the parties agreed to the creation of collaborative projects in the field of technology entrepreneurship aimed at systematic development of innovation infrastructure in the region. In June, ITMO University and the Krai administration plan to develop a roadmap for their future relationship.
