  • ITMO Researchers Develop New Terahertz Pulse-Based Data Encoding Method

Researchers around the world are working on ways to transfer data in the terahertz (THz) range, which would make it possible to send and receive information much faster than what is allowed by today’s technology. But the issue they’re facing is that it is much more difficult to encode data in the THz range than in the GHz range, which is currently used by 5G tech. A group of scientists from ITMO University have demonstrated the possibility of modifying terahertz pulses in order to use them for data transmission. An article on this subject was published in Scientific Reports.

  • How Russian and French Researchers are Helping to Restore Classic Art

Terahertz radiation is a type of electromagnetic radiation located within the frequency spectrum between infrared and radio. It passes well through a variety of materials and is harmless to humans, which opens up a wide range of its possible applications. Researchers at ITMO University are actively working on this subject in collaboration with their French colleagues. Together, the scientists are developing a pulsed terahertz spectrometer for application in the analysis and restoration of artworks. Read more about the project and how terahertz technology lets scientists explore art in the article below.

  • ITMO Scientists Make First-Ever Measurement of Nonlinearity in Terahertz Frequency Range

Researchers from ITMO University have, for the first time in history, managed to directly measure the nonlinear refractive index of matter in the terahertz range. The results of their experiments were compared with previously existing theoretical predictions in order to confirm the presence of nonlinear effects. The obtained data can be used to control light, as well as in fundamental and biomedical research. The results have been published in Optics Express.

  • ITMO Fellow Ilya Anoshkin on Nanotubes and Working Abroad

Terahertz technologies hail a new era where blood tests are much more accurate, and Internet faster. All this is thanks to nanomaterials and their unique properties. One of the leading researchers in this field, Ilya Anoshkin joined ITMO University’s teaching staff via the ITMO Fellowship program. In spite of his extensive and successful experience of working in Finland and Sweden, he is reluctant to call himself a scientist. ITMO.NEWS met Ilya to find out why, and to talk about the technologies of the future and his take on teaching at ITMO.

  • Physicists Conduct Study of Terahertz Radiation in Liquids

A research team from ITMO University and the University of Rochester (the USA) have conducted a study on the formation of terahertz radiation in liquids. Previously, the generation of such radiation in a liquid medium was considered impossible due to high absorption. However, in their new research, the scientists described this phenomenon’s physical nature and demonstrated that liquid radiation sources can be equally effective to traditional ones. The results have been published in Applied Physics Letters.
