  • New Method to Detect Influenza and Coronavirus Suggested at ITMO

Researchers from ITMO University and Smorodintsev Research Institute of Influenza have suggested a multipurpose method that can detect coronavirus and influenza type A and B viruses in biological liquids. At the core of the novel method is surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) combined with machine learning, which help make it up to 85% accurate – meaning that it performs better than express tests (which produce false positive results in 11-48% of cases). Moreover, the new method compares favorably with PCR, too, as it takes minutes to complete. The solution is described in an article published in Biosensors.

  • ITMO Researchers Ramp Up X-Ray Laser Research Into Nano- and Biomaterials

In 2019, a Russian federal program for the development of synchrotron and neutron-focused research was launched. The program will go on until 2027; in that time, new megascience-class projects, such as X-ray lasers, synchrotrons, and neutron generators, are expected to be launched. As part of the program, in 2021 the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education announced a contest for research and specialist training. A team of scientists from ITMO University participated in the contest and won with a project on X-ray laser technologies in nano- and biomaterials science.

  • Chemists From ITMO University Created New Diagnostic Method for Difficult Climate Conditions

Scientists from the SCAMT Laboratory of ITMO University developed a method to detect viral RNA without special equipment. The sensor is based on a polymerization reaction: if the sample contains traces of the target virus, then under the ultraviolet irradiation the liquid-sensor turns into a gel. The results of such an analysis can easily be detected even by people with limited vision. As the required reagents are widely available and resistant to temperature extremes, the method can be used in difficult field conditions. The results are published in RSC Advances.

  • ITMO Scientists Develop Gene Analysis Software to Combat Superbug Viruses

Researchers from ITMO University and the Center of Physical and Chemical Medicine have developed an algorithm capable of tracking the spread of antibiotic resistance genes in gut microbiota DNA and revealed additional evidence of resistance gene transfer between different bacterial species. The method can not only contribute to the development of effective therapy schemes, but also curb the spread of superbugs. The results of the research were published in Bioinformatics journal.

  • International Research Team Makes Progress in HRS Virus Study

An international research team that includes scientists from ITMO University has come closer to understanding the structure of the human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) which affects thousands every year. The reserachers have partially mapped out the three-dimensional structure of the NS1 protein contained in HRSV and identified the structural parts responsible for the suppression of the human immune system. The results of the study have been published in the Nature Microbiology journal.
