Description

On March 13, starting from 7pm, ITMO University's Institute of Design & Urban Studies and the architectural bureau MLA+ will host a seminar on "Vernacular districts of cities: what are they and how should they be studied?"

The seminar tackles the question of vernacular urban districts, which are natural borders of a city as viewed and defined by its residents in their day-to-day activities. Usually different from administrative borders, vernacular districts mirror the reality of how the city's urban space is used, as well as the historical identity of the city's districts and the borders of activities the city encompasses, formed by the morphology of its construction and the environment that was built as a result.

In this the seminar will present the research done as part of the "SPb Livehoods" project by QULLAB, the Quality of Urban Life Laboratory of ITMO University's Institute of Design & Urban Studies, and of the "Undiscovered St. Petersburg" project by the Russian-Dutch architectural bureau MLA+. Their presentations will be followed by an open discussion of the results provided.

The seminar aims to introduce participants to the concept of vernacular city districts and the research done in this cutting-edge field of urban studies, including research methods, new topics for consideration, as well as how to transfer the theory into real-world, applied urban projects and who could be interested in commissioning this kind of research.

The speakers of the seminar include:

  • The QULLAB team: Alexandra Nenko, Artem Konyukhov, Marina Petrova, Maria Podkorytova
  • The MLA+ team: Yana Golubeva, Viktor Korotych, Daniil Veretennikov, Danila Gorokhov.
