Student Spotlight: Marcos Uriel Soto Munguia, Mexico

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Marcos, and I am a computing engineer from Amecameca, a small town in Mexico.

What first sparked your interest in game development?

I have been interested in video games since childhood. At first, I was simply playing them, but over time I became fascinated by how games are built and how they can create immersive experiences for players.

You've just completed the Foundation Program at ITMO and are about to begin your Master's. How has this preparatory journey been for you?

It was both challenging and rewarding. Beyond improving my Russian skills, it helped me adapt to a new educational environment and provided an opportunity to meet students from different countries, learn about their cultures, and build friendships that I hope will last throughout my studies.

What made you choose ITMO University for your Master's?

I was particularly drawn to the Game Development Technologies Master's program because it combines technical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience. I also appreciated the international environment on campus and the focus on preparing students for real-world challenges in the gaming industry.

What has been the biggest adjustment for you since arriving in St. Petersburg?

The biggest adjustment was definitely the climate, especially the winter. At the same time, I was pleasantly surprised by the white nights, which are a unique and beautiful experience. I also enjoyed discovering Russian food and getting to know the people, who have been kind and helpful. 

As you prepare to officially start your Master's, what excites you most about the program?

I’m excited to learn how professional game projects are developed from concept to final product. I am also looking forward to collaborating with classmates who share the same passion for creating games and pushing the boundaries of interactive entertainment.

Have you discovered any favorite places in the city to relax, explore, or find inspiration?

One of my favorite things to do is simply walk around the historic center of the city. I enjoy exploring different neighborhoods, parks, and riverside areas because there is always something interesting to discover. 

When you're not studying, how do you usually spend your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy photography, spending time with friends, and visiting speaking clubs to practice languages. I also like exploring the city, meeting new people, and occasionally playing video games to better understand different game design ideas and mechanics.

What has surprised you the most about life in Russia?

It was the vibrant cultural life of St. Petersburg and how welcoming and helpful people can be once you take the time to get to know them. Despite the initial stereotypes about Russians being reserved, I have found them to be warm and sincere.

What keeps you motivated during difficult moments?

My long-term goals. I remind myself why I chose this path and the opportunities that studying abroad can create for my future. I also draw strength from my family and friends back in Mexico, even though they are far away. Knowing that I have their support gives me the courage to keep pushing forward.

Finally, what advice would you give students from Mexico who are considering coming to ITMO?

My advice is to arrive with some knowledge of the Russian language and culture, keep an open mind, take advantage of every opportunity to learn, and actively participate in university life.
