Hi! Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello! My name is Chathma Fernando, and I am an international student from Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is a place where people from different ethnicities and religions live together in a unique blend of traditions, cuisines, and festivals. I am proud to represent my country and share its culture with people from around the world while studying abroad.
What made you choose Russia and ITMO specifically?
My journey to Russia was completely unexpected. It was a last-minute decision that turned into one of the most life-changing experiences of my life. Even before I had plans to study abroad, I had already started learning Russian and German simply because I loved learning new languages. Looking back, I couldn't be happier that I did.
When choosing a university, ITMO stood out immediately. Its programs and strong emphasis on research, technology, creativity, and practical learning matched exactly what I was looking for. I was also impressed by the diverse international community.
How has your experience in the Foundation Program been so far?
It has been amazing. Being far from home can be challenging, but I found a second family here. I've also had the privilege of learning from incredible teachers who have always been supportive, encouraging, and dedicated to helping us succeed.
How has your language journey been so far?
I think it has been going really well. The most exciting part is being able to use what I have learned to communicate with people in everyday conversations. Seeing that my efforts are becoming practical and useful makes me very happy and motivates me to continue improving my Russian.
Have you discovered any favorite places in the city?
I haven't had the chance to explore many places in the city so far, but since I love traveling, I'm really looking forward to discovering more. I especially want to explore calm and peaceful places like forests, nature areas, and hiking spots where I can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors.
At the same time, I really admire the unique architecture of St. Petersburg. The city's beautiful historical buildings and artistic atmosphere are something I always enjoy exploring whenever I get the opportunity.
When you're not studying, how do you usually spend your free time?

What are you most looking forward to as you prepare to begin your main degree program?
I am really looking forward to diving deeper into my field of study, medicine. Studying in Russian will also be challenging, so I'm hoping for the best. I'm excited to gain more specialized knowledge, challenge myself academically, and apply what I learn in practical situations. I am also looking forward to continuing to grow as a person, meeting more people from different backgrounds, and making the most of the opportunities that come my way.
What keeps you motivated during difficult moments?
It is remembering the reason why I started this journey and the determination to finish what I began. I want to prove to myself that I am stronger than the challenges I face and that I can overcome any obstacles along the way. My family – their support, sacrifices, and belief in me – is also one of my biggest sources of motivation.
Finally, what advice would you give to students from Sri Lanka who are considering coming to ITMO?
Firstly, you will not regret your choice. It is a journey that you will truly fall in love with. My advice to students from Sri Lanka is to be open-minded; moving to a new country, adapting to a different culture, and learning a new language may feel difficult at the beginning, but these challenges become some of the most valuable parts of the journey.
Embrace every opportunity, stay curious, and do not be afraid to try new things. With the right mindset, determination, and willingness to explore, ITMO can become a place where you discover yourself, build lifelong friendships, and create unforgettable memories.
