By February 1, all Russian 11th-graders must decide which subjects they’ll take in 2026’s Unified State Exam (USE). If these requirements apply to your case, don’t delay making the choice. To help you, here are the key exams that’ll be relevant to most Russian ITMO applicants.

To enroll in a program of your choice, you must provide the results of three exams: one in a subject of your choice and two mandatory ones – in advanced mathematics and the Russian language.

Computer science

This is the most popular subject among applicants to Bachelor’s programs at ITMO University. If you pass the exam with a high score, you can choose from 12 different subject areas: from applied math and comp-sci to robotics.

Depending on the choice of subject area, applicants require other knowledge, as well: for instance, aspiring roboticists must be familiar with the fundamentals of mechanics. Programming skills requirements, too, can differ between programs; some require familiarity with algorithmic programming, while others call for specific knowledge of low-level programming, information security, or software development.

The second most popular exam is required when applying to programs in engineering and physics, including laser, photonics, and wireless technologies, as well as theoretical and experimental physics. In the new academic year, applicants who complete their physics exam can also apply to the instrumentation and electrical engineering tracks of the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence program.
