The method was developed by ITMO University researchers. According to them, terahertz holography will allow researchers to test for diabetes faster and cheaper.

The technology is based on the fact that some diseases, including diabetes, lead to changes in blood composition and, as a result, to changes in its response to terahertz radiation.

In order to obtain a sample, specialists from the Almazov National Medical Research Centre took a blood sample, separated plasma from blood, and dried it via a special low-temperature method. The powder was then formed into a “pill”.

Unlike liquid blood samples that require special storage conditions, these pills’ properties remain intact for a long time. They are easier to transport and don’t require additional reagents, which makes testing faster and cheaper.
