World-Renowned Professors Maurice Herlihy and Nir Shavit on Computer Science in Life
What's the difference between distributed and parallel computing? Why is research in this area an intellectual pleasure? How do prestigious awards influence unknown sciences? Godel Prize and Dijkstra Prize winner, Professor Maurice Herlihy from Brown University and Nir Shavit from MIT answered these questions and more. They also explained what inspired them to work in computer science and what they thought about ITMO University. They were lecturing at ITMO's summer school "Practice and Theory in Concurrent Computing" this month.

Andrey Stankevich: Komsomolskaya Pravda’s Media-Person of the Year
On July 4 the St. Petersburg office of Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper announced the thirteen winners of its “Media-Person of the Year – 2017” awards that are given to notable subjects of the year’s news stories. In summer, celebrities gather at Krestovsky Island for the award ceremony. One of this year’s winners is Andrey Stankevich - Associate Professor at ITMO’s Computer Technologies Department and coach for ITMO’s programming team. His protégés have become winners of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest on seven occasions – a world record that is yet to be broken.

Prime Minister Medvedev Congratulates ACM ICPC Winners
Last month, ITMO University’s team, for the seventh time in history, was awarded the World Cup of ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. Today they were congratulated on their achievement in person by Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. He met with the students in Konstantinovsky Palace in Strelna. The meeting was also attended by Rector Vladimir Vasilyev, Vladimir Parfenov, Dean of Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, and Roman Elizarov, ITMO alumni and member of ACM ICPC’s organizational board.

Champions of ACM ICPC-2017: ITMO University’s team returns to St. Petersburg
Ivan Belonogov, Vladimir Smykalov and Ilya Zban, who became world champions last Wednesday, and their coach, Andrey Stankevich, brought home the World Champion Cup in collegiate programming. This is the university’s seventh victory. No other university in the world has managed to beat ITMO University’s world record for number of ACM ICPC Champion titles.

10 Things We Are Proud of in 2016

Aiming High: World’s Leading Experts on Modern Sports Programming
Following the results of the regional semi-finals of ACM ICPC, the results of the All-Russian School Programming Contest in Programming came in. Schoolers from Almaty, Astana and Moscow got the gold here; participants from St. Petersburg shared the silver medals with their peers from Tbilisi, and the school kids from Ekaterinburg, Izhevsk, Kremenchuk and Vitebsk took home the bronze. At a round table dedicated to sports programming, such people as Andrei Lopatin and Andrei Stankevich, coaches for the St. Petersburg teams, Lidya Perovskaya, tutor at the Computer Technology Department, Vladimir Parfenov, Dean of the Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, and the world champions in programming discussed why kids from the CIS have been beating all records for the past 15 years.
