  • ITMO Researchers Create Robots That Withstand Shock Loads

An ITMO PhD student has devised a way to design flexible robots capable of withstanding a shock load, retaining its energy, and adapting to movement on rough surfaces. The new robot’s joints are connected by flexible hinges rather than turning kinematic pairs. With such mechanisms, it’s possible to increase the capabilities of robots that interact with their environments: quadrupeds, anthropomorphic robots, and collaborative manipulators. The new design will be unveiled at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2024).

  • ITMO Physicists Develop Multifunctional Material for Thermal Melanoma Therapy

Researchers at ITMO have suggested a quick and simple method to synthesize gold plasmonic nanodiamonds – these hybrid materials can find their application in photothermal therapy of melanoma. The new material can perform two functions: heat up a tumor and measure its temperature. In vitro experiments demonstrated that once plasmonic nanodiamonds were introduced into a tumor and heated, the tumor’s growth slowed down by 65.22%. The results of the study were described in Nanophotonics.
