  • ITMO and Almazov National Medical Research Centre Researchers Study The Effect of Gaming On the Human Brain

    Pavel Tikhonov and Mikhail Zubkov, researchers from ITMO’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering are working on a project that uses functional magnetic resonance imaging to study the brains of people who spend 20 to 30 hours a week gaming. The scientists hypothesize similarities between the brains of ardent gamers and people addicted to chemical substances.

  • Scientists From ITMO and the US Assemble New Reference Genomes of Two Malaria Mosquito Species

    This project will help researchers better understand the genetics of insects spreading this dangerous disease. For instance, biologists got the opportunity to search for regions of mosquito genomes responsible for connection with the pathogen and for their feeding behavior. The authors of the project believe that in the future they will provide their colleagues with new tools to prevent the spread of malaria. The results of the project were published in GigaScience.

  • ITMO PhD Student Karina Pats on Working in France During the Pandemic

    Karina Pats, a PhD student at ITMO’s Faculty of Information Technologies and Programming, studies the functioning of nuclear receptors using molecular dynamics and docking. She works actively together with the laboratory of Ferdinand Molnár at Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan where she did her internship last spring. Thanks to the Erasmus+ program, now she got to work on a bioinformatics algorithm project at the University of Lorraine, Nancy (France). ITMO.NEWS talked to Karina Pats to learn more about life in France, new projects and colleagues, as well as landing an internship during the pandemic.

  • ITMO Associate Professor Anastasia Pavlova On Teaching, Social Media, and Participation in Women’s Competition

    Anastasia Pavlova, a lecturer at ITMO’s Faculty of Biotechnologies, was nominated for the Top Women 2020 award in Consulting, Education, and Business Training. The competition’s jury included Irina Khakamada, a public figure, Lyasan Utiasheva, the winner of the 2001 World Cup in rhythmic gymnastics, and Vlad Lisovets, a TV host. ITMO.NEWS met with Anastasia Pavlova to learn more about her reasons to join the competition, balancing careers in science and industry, as well as her thoughts on social media in education.

  • Researchers Create New Anti-Counterfeit Labels

    The labels can be used to mark various electronics, medicine, and jewelry. Their authenticity can only be checked with special equipment, thus providing additional protection against fake merchandise. The research is published in Advanced Materials.
