AR/AI Headset by ITMO Startup Lands Top-25 Spot at Sber500 IT Accelerator
Scientists from ITMO University are developing a cognitive AR/AI headset for Russian engineers working in the oil and gas industry. The device, which integrates augmented reality and artificial intelligence tech, will allow on-site workers to instantly communicate with corporate knowledge bases and remote experts. Its creators aim to reduce the risks of costly downtime for oil and gas facilities during emergencies and facilitate the resolution of critical engineering challenges. The startup Photonica.tech has been selected as one of 25 finalists of the international IT accelerator Sber500 out of over 1,500 applicants, marking it as a promising DeepTech project for the Russian industry.

International AR & VR Conference Wrap Up: Virtual Museums and Remakes of Soviet Games
In mid-August, the Tochka Kipeniya (Boiling Point) platform based at St. Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation hosted the International Conference of Augmented and Virtual Reality Technologies in Creative Industries. The event was held within the cross-border cooperation program Interreg Baltic Sea Region 2014-2020.

ITMO Researchers Win Grant for Development of Smart Glasses Components
The scientists will develop a method for the development of waveguides invisible to the naked eye and which will make it possible to transmit images onto transparent glass and polymer surfaces. It will also be possible to use the same technology to create sensors useful in the production of protective eyewear for workers in hazardous occupations.

AR Technologies at Home: FASTEP Startup Team on Easy-to-Understand Manuals for Household Appliances
In June 2020, the company Spider Group, a resident of ITMO University’s Accelerator, will present to the general public its brand-new app FASTEP. The development includes 1,500 step-by-step manuals for five classes of household appliances: washing machines, microwave ovens, slow cookers, ovens, and hobs. The app will help consumers navigate their way around using the appliances with the help of augmented reality (AR) technologies. The team discussed the business idea, the product’s audience, and their participation in ITMO Accelerator in this interview with ITMO.NEWS.

ITMO's First Game Development Graduates on Russian GameDev and Their Careers
Three years ago, the Master’s program in Game Development Technologies was launched at ITMO University. There are two specializations: Game Design and In-Game Technologies, which includes game engine development and artificial intelligence programming. During their studies, students of this program participated in creating applications for the 2019 Minsk European Games and WorldSkills Kazan 2019. Now, they work at major game development companies. ITMO Teams Win First and Third Prizes at AR-CRAFT Augmented Reality Tech Competition
The State Hermitage Museum’s General Staff Building was site to the final event of the AR-CRAFT competition for the developers of augmented reality software. The competition was organized by ITMO University, Epson, Ascreen, and the State Hermitage Museum. Participants were tasked with developing augmented reality applications that would enhance the experience of visiting Russia’s largest museum. ITMO.NEWS attended the awards ceremony to learn about the winners’ projects.

ITMO University Specialists Develop AR Solution for the Second European Games in Minsk
On June 21-30, Minsk (Belarus) hosted the second European Games, large-scale sports games with participants from over 40 countries. The opening and closing ceremonies included comprehensive immersion in augmented reality via the simultaneous use of mobile devices, information screens on the stadium and live TV broadcasts. The AR elements of the show were developed by ITMO University’s Laboratory of Interactive Visualization. Here is more on the work conducted by the unit.
