From Reindeer Herders to Treating Diseases: Bioinformatician Anna Popenko on Studying Gut Microbiome
Gut microbiome is the largest of its kind in the human body, and its microorganisms are directly connected to the appearance and development of many diseases. We talked to ITMO Fellow and bioinformatician Anna Popenko about why microbiome research is important and how it can be beneficial. At ITMO, Dr. Popenko heads the group studying the connection between gut microbiome, the environment a person lives in, and their health.

ITMO Researchers Discover Connection Between Gut Microbiome and Melanoma Treatment
Having analyzed metagenome data from hundreds of microbiome samples, scientists from ITMO University have found out how the composition of the gut microbiome affects the efficacy of melanoma treatment. In the future, the discovered link can be used to develop treatment plans for cancer patients, as well as improve the efficacy of melanoma treatment. The results of the research are described in a paper published in Life Science Alliance.

Researchers Uncover the Moscow Subway Microbiome
Brought together by an international project, scientists from all over the world study bacteria in various public spaces, such as the subway or the streets. Recently, a group of ITMO University researchers has looked into the microbiome of the Moscow Subway using the method already applied in other cities within the project. The research was published in Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with the scientists to ask them about the bacterial world of the Russian capital’s subway system and how it might be similar to that of New York's public transportation.

ITMO Scientists Determine Impact of Probiotics on Human Gut Microbiome
A group of researchers from ITMO University and the company Knomics conducted a month-long experiment studying how the microbiota of 150 volunteers responded to regular consumption of probiotics-enriched fermented dairy products. Published in Nutrients, the findings demonstrate that the introduction of these dietary changes increases the amount of beneficial bacteria in the gut, which in its turn can have a positive impact on the overall health condition. The project was conducted with the participation of PepsiCo R&D Inc.

Russian Developers Created a Platform for Interactive Analysis of Metagenomic Data
A team of developers from Skolkovo, ITMO University and MIPT presented an online service called Knomics-Biota, which allows for a comprehensive study of intestinal microbiome genetic data. Using this service, you can figure out what types of bacteria are present in hundreds of gut metagenomes, their relative proportion, and the amount of vitamins and other beneficial substances they produce. With the help of an interactive interface, you can look at the results from different perspectives, which helps to identify the relationship between microbiota and nutrition, lifestyle and health. The research was published in BioData Mining.

Gut Microbiome Showed Positive Response to High-Fiber Diet in Two Weeks
The research team from ITMO University, NSU, MIPT, “Atlas Biomed Group” and “Knomics” company analyzed the impact of short-term changes in diet on the condition of the gut microbiome. Assessing changes in the microbiome structure of 248 volunteers, the researchers concluded that diet enriched with food fiber significantly changes the balance of gut bacterial species in two weeks. Obtained results will be used for a personal dietary recommendation system. This will be helpful for both healthy people and those who suffer from metabolic disorders and run the risk of atherosclerosis or diabetes. The study is published in Nutrients.
